'Mousetrap' turns Korean folktale into Netflix thriller

>The stolen-identity thriller 'Mousetrap' is officially primed for its global Netflix debut.

>The webtoon-based series follows Mun-Jae (Ryu Jun-Yeol), a novelist who loses his name, face and life to a mysterious entity known as "the Rat." He teams up with No-Ja (Sul Kyung-Gu), a loan shark, and Sun-Yong (Lee Kyu-Hyung), a detective, embarking on a high-stakes hunt to uncover the identity of the Rat.

>Helmed by Director Kim Hong-Sun, who was acclaimed for stylized action and tension in the Netflix series 'Dear Hongrang' (2025) and hit dramas 'The Guest' (2018) and 'Voice' (2017), the drama is inspired by the classic Korean folktale premise that "a rat becomes human after eating fingernails," promising to deliver psychological dread alongside genre-thriller suspense.

>"The work is motivated by the folktale of the fingernail-eating rat. It is a thriller about a man whose life has been stolen trying to reclaim his identity," Director Kim introduced the drama during a press conference at Hotel Naru Seoul - MGallery in Mapo District, Seoul, Thursday.

>Kim added that the webtoon script immediately drew him in. "The original webtoon had a chilling sense of horror, and our writer adapted it dynamically into a chase format. Reading the script, I resonated with Mun-Jae's emotions. I just wanted to see who the Rat was, so there was no reason not to direct it," he added.

>The cast cited the fast-paced narrative and gripping premise as their primary reasons for joining the project.

>Ryu said he found the setup fascinating. "I remembered reading the original folktale as a child. Adapting that story for global audiences appealed to me, and the script raised so many questions that I voluntarily looked up the original webtoon," he said.

>Sul noted that the script stood out among the projects he was considering. "There are no supernatural powers or spiritual elements here, just characters who seem somehow incomplete. The sense of immersion as they hunt for the truth was incredible," he said.

>When asked what would make the show different from a series with similar themes, the director pointed to its structure. "There are certainly shared themes, but 'Mousetrap' pivots into a relentless chase. We start from a similar premise, but the execution takes a completely different path. The real thrill lies in the cat-and-mouse game of unmasking the imposter. That psychological tension was our primary focus throughout filming and directing," he said.

>Ryu plays Mun-Jae, a writer who loses everything overnight. Describing him as a novelist who lived in isolation from the world for three years, he said, "When his life is suddenly stolen by an unknown entity, he fights to get it back."

>Marking the first dual role of his career, Ryu carefully calibrated his performance to differentiate the two characters. "Since I am portraying both individuals, I focused on subtle adjustments in personality and gaze. Primary emphasis was placed on voice tone so viewers could immediately tell them apart," he said.

>Describing his character, No-Ja, Sul painted a picture of a fading era. "Think of him as part of the last generation of classic mobsters — a midlevel boss type," Sul explained. "He doesn't care about personal connections or who anyone is. If he’s told to bury someone, he buries them, takes his cut and moves on."

>Kim pointed to a single thematic line as the anchor of the series. "There’s a dialogue in the show that says 'life is like an island' and I think that line sums up the entire drama," Kim said. "Each character drifts through the narrative isolated like a lone island. Keeping that sense of detachment in mind will make the viewing experience all the more compelling."

>'Mousetrap' premieres globally on Netflix on Aug. 28.

>Ha Young’s agency has released a new statement regarding the status of her drama project.

>On August 20, a media outlet reported that the actress had returned to filming for the upcoming SBS drama 'The Long Shot Trial'. Previously, she was reported to have shed tears on set on August 13 and resumed filming after taking a break for several hours following the controversy over her great-grandfather’s alleged pro-Japanese activities. Following the incident, she reportedly took a weeklong break at the production team’s consideration and returned to filming today.

>In response to the report, Ha Young’s agency BISTUS Entertainment stated, “Ha Young is continuing with her previously scheduled filming. We ask for your understanding that it is difficult to provide specific details regarding the schedule or progress separately.”

>Sources from the drama further relayed to the press, “We are taking the recent matter involving the actor very seriously,” adding, “We are currently having careful discussions from various angles with the production company and other relevant parties.” They added, “We will announce any decisions through official channels as soon as they are made. However, given the practical circumstances in which we must minimize the damage to the numerous staff members and cast, we are currently coordinating the remaining essential schedules from various angles.”

>Set to premiere in 2027, SBS’s 'The Long Shot Trial' is a lighthearted legal comedy that follows the ragtag members of a law office led by Kwon Baek (Lee Je-Hoon), a former lawyer who now works as a law office manager. Together, they find unconventional ways to turn seemingly unwinnable cases into victories.

>The drama is reportedly about 90 percent complete in filming. Meanwhile, further concerns have been raised as the drama is based on a popular Japanese drama and is scheduled to air in February, ahead of The March 1st Independence Movement Day. Amid the controversy, Ha Young’s agency previously released a statement while the actress also issued a handwritten apology.

>Hong Min-Ki’s agency has refuted claims made by his ex-girlfriend (hereinafter “Ms. A”) regarding a forced abortion.

>Following Hong Min-Ki’s agency’s statement from August 19, Ms. A further claimed that she had been subjected to verbal abuse, gaslighting, and pressure to undergo an abortion during their time together.

>On the morning of August 20, Hong Min-Ki’s agency Fable Company released a new statement refuting the allegations.

>Read the agency’s full statement below:

>Hello. This is Fable Company. We would like to state our position regarding the additional posts made by Ms. A concerning our agency’s actor Hong Min-Ki.

>In her additional posts, Ms. A claims that she confirmed a pregnancy during her relationship with the actor and underwent an abortion, stating that she possesses medical records and ultrasound photos as evidence.

>In fact, at approximately 6 a.m. on August 19, 2026, Ms. A sent the actor an ultrasound photo along with the message, “Shut your mouth before I expose all of this too.” However, Ms. A had never shown any such ultrasound photos to the actor prior to this. As the ultrasound photo in question appears different from those that typically confirm a pregnancy, our company has requested verification from obstetric and gynecological medical professionals and intends to submit this as evidence.

>Furthermore, upon confirming with the actor, it has been verified that Ms. A never showed the actor a pregnancy test, and contrary to Ms. A’s claims, the actor never made any remarks pressuring Ms. A to have an abortion.

>Moreover, on July 13—the very day Ms. A claims she underwent the abortion surgery—she suggested to the actor that they go cycling together. When the actor declined, Ms. A sent a video of herself cycling alone. We have secured and are keeping all records of this conversation and the video.

>Pregnancy and abortion are extremely sensitive and serious matters. Despite this, Ms. A has publicly posted claims on social media that are entirely untrue, such as the allegation that the actor pressured her into an abortion after confirming the pregnancy. As a result, the actor has once again suffered severe and irreparable damage to his reputation and image.

>We will no longer respond by repeatedly refuting the other party’s false claims.

>Based on the materials secured thus far, we will immediately proceed with the necessary civil and criminal legal procedures to ensure that the facts related to this case are clearly brought to light.

>Finally, we earnestly request that you refrain from reckless speculation and the spreading or reproduction of unverified claims as this can cause further harm not only to the actor but to everyone involved in this matter.
