Cat food update and vet bills! (Gainesville, FL)

Hi all! Sorry for the late update. Thank you all so much for the cat food! I got a lot of cans that should last the kitties for a good while over the summer :)

Some updates on the colony: I brought two of the friendly kitties to the vet for an annual where they had exams and got their booster vaccines as well as flea medicine and dewormer. I also finally trapped Houdini, an elusive injured cat whom I thought was neutered but may have actually been intact (his ear is deformed so it was hard to tell), and brought him to my TNR place this morning for vet care and neutering! He has a bad eye and dental problems, so they’ll be treating him over the next two weeks, and then I’ll assess if he needs further care at a full-service vet.

Unfortunately the vet bills have been adding up. The costs of the annuals were $165 and $131, and the cost of the TNR is $20. Some of it was covered by previous donations, thank you so much, but I still owe a remaining of $292 in vet expenses and would appreciate any donations! Thank you all so much!!

Putting a collar on a stray cat

There’s a bonded pair of cats I feed. One is more friendly (around regulars, but scared of new people) and the other is more skittish. The friendlier one has gotten trapped in a window well twice, so I bought an AirTag breakaway collar for her so I’ll be able to find her more easily/faster if she gets stuck again (and bc there’s construction in the area so I can‘t really check the window wells anymore), but she freaked out when I tried to put it on her. Do you have any tips for getting it on her? I’m able to pick her up and get her into a carrier, but I don’t want to stress her unnecessarily if it’s not needed. If she didn’t keep getting stuck I wouldn’t push it, but first time she got stuck she was in there for possibly over a week and was severely dehydrated :/

Hi hi! Two weeks ago, I trapped Sphinx and took him to my TNR place for treatment because his eyes weren't looking very good. They treated him with doxycycline and erythromycin for a week, and we picked him up last week. Since the area around his eyes still looked inflamed when I picked him up, we took him to another vet for a second opinion. Since he needed anesthesia for the exam and they had to squeeze him in the next day, the bill ended up being on the more expensive side (around $200), but the vet was able to confirm that the area that looked inflamed was only scar tissue likely due to previous infections, but that he currently looked well and good to go home!

Yesterday, I also finally managed to trap another kitty, Ham, on my college campus who has been evading TNR for years! Since my local TNR place is booked up, I took her to my Humane Society's feral cat spay/neuter program ($100 and includes spay/neuter, vaccines, flea medicine, and ofc an eartip) this morning and will be picking her up this afternoon.

And finally, I'm down to my last box of wet cat food and need more for the campus kitties. I still have plenty of dry food left though, but any wet food or treats would help a lot!

Also, I can't remember if I posted an update or not, but both of my fosters Sushi (now Mort) and Cali Roll have been adopted and are doing great in their forever homes! Thank you all so much for helping make this possible!!

This is Sphinx. We just picked him up from my TNR place that treated him with doxycycline and erythromycin for a week, but his eye doesn't really look much better to me :/ I'm leaning towards taking him to a different vet, but logistically it's hard to find someone to foster him and then also to drive him bc the lowest cost vet in my area is a 30 min drive away. But the last thing I want to do is release him when he still needs medical attention and not be able to retrap him. Right now he's spending the night at Honks' foster's place, and she's going to try to see if she can clean the crust around his eyes.

Honks had his dental today! They removed a lot of his teeth which were rotting, so he now only has 3 teeth left. He also finished his antibiotics for his jaw, which is in much better condition now. Honks is currently on pain medicine for the next few days as he recovers from the surgery, but in a week he will be free to return back to his home on my college campus!

Thank you all so much for your support! Honks received $815 in addition to the $350 from previous donations. The total of his dental was $806, so the remaining $359 will go towards vet care and food for some of the other stray kitties. I also trapped Sphinx last week, and he is also currently being treated at Operation Catnip for his eye issues. Thank you again!!

I did not get her and she missed her appt 😔 So looks like I'll have to pay extra to get her spayed elsewhere bc my TNR place is all booked till the end of next month, and I'm out of town after that. And apparently a new cat showed up and triggered the trap without getting caught :/ I think it might be the one wandering male cat that has gotten one or two cats nearby pregnant last year. I hope that hearing the trap go off didn't spook him too much 😭
