For context, I live in the CBD and I'm a 23 year old man who is in a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy. My disability is purely physical. I go to uni, work and have a pretty stock standard life.
I am somebody with romantic and sexual needs (shocker). Most gay establishments (bars, clubs etc.) aren't wheelchair accessible. When I put myself out there on the apps (both dating and hookup apps), I very rarely get any traction. It puts me in a very lonely position as I'm the type of person that craves connection. Every time I try to put myself out there I always end up feeling horrible about myself and my body. I always end up having to go for men that I don't find attractive and who to some extent fetishise my situation. I do this because I know that when I actually go for men who I find good looking, I'm always left with a dry inbox or dehumanising messages. It gets to the point where I have to resign myself to being alone. Also, because of the lack of accessibility in queer spaces, it's harder for me to connect with the community and make like-minded friends.
I'm really wanting to stop this cycle of loneliness. Can anyone give me advice about the apps, spaces or events in Melbourne that may suit me, or just any advice about being gay and disabled?
Thank you to whoever reads this and any advice is much appreciated 😄
