i’m so excited for my first time reading east of eden!

i hate all the us covers available (especially that gd netflix sticker) so i paid to have this one shipped from london. i was holding out for the us penguin mass paperback with the yellowish border + green scenery for a few weeks but could not find any online. does anyone else get picky with the cover you choose before reading books you know you’re gonna love?

perfume for grace kelly in cannes

one of my comfort movies - To Catch A Thief (1955) - It never fails to transport me to the rich technicolor time capsule of the french riviera. I’m picturing something aquatic, floral, and bright.

The Golden Path and Global Warming

Hey all, I finished the book a few weeks ago and I keep mulling over this comparison in my head and i’m wondering if this has been discussed before.

In Leto II’s vision of the golden path, he sees the loss of spice due to the abundance of water being brought to Arrakis and the interference with the sand trout/worm life cycle. This brings unimaginable consequences considering the amount of people who rely on the spice for health/transportation.

As someone of gen z who has dealt with a lot of climate nihilism, this feels VERY familiar. I see spice as a symbol for fossil fuels and other finite, natural resources we have built our society around. These industries are not only unsustainable, they are actively changing the chemical composition of our airs and oceans at a rapid pace. Eventually, it’s going to catch up with us, and many people/animals will die, until those left learn to adapt to a changed planet and rebuild new industries that are hopefully more sustainable.

I know that global warming theories were around at the time Frank wrote the series but it wasn’t a super mainstream topic of discussion. Maybe it’s possible he had it in mind?

A book that gives Bravo/Real Housewives energy

Ive read Big Little Lies and The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires, which I feel fit the housewife theme. I picked up The Embassy Wife at a lending library to me and it was way too corny I did not like it. I would like something that has to do with housewives but it doesn’t have to , if there’s a book that reminds you of VPR, summer house, below deck etc !!

Perfume for The Worst Person in The World

One of my favorite movies, i’m wondering what niche perfume she would wear.

I’ve never been to Oslo so I have no clue what it would smell like. I’m thinking of something fresh and green, as much of this movie takes place in the summer, with some sort of musk considering the minimalist vibe

This was so shady 😭

On my first watch, and in the season 5 finale this is the update producers chose for Porscha, I started cackling! The fact that the producers chose to phrase it this way and not include any other updates makes me feel like they had it out for her

Children of Dune Questions

Hi everyone! I just finished the book, and I loved the “weirdness” that supposedly ramps up as the series progresses. The transformation that Leto II goes through feels like reading a weird spice trip à la Hunter S Thompson.

I have some questions about the differences between the twins’ role in the Golden Path. There are several references to a certain female weakness towards possession that obviously won its battle with Alia. Ghanima is almost possessed by Chani and Leto fears she would not survive under the spice trance .

However, if the twins both possess the same memories, are they not essentially the same person? Or do the memories they choose to access actually develop their individuality as people? If Ghanima did not end up mauled by the tiger and it was Leto who was injured instead, would she have been able to replace him in the plan?

Obviously it’s kind of a silly question considering the future is said to pre-determined , but i’m just curious as a woman reader and fan of the series, trying to justify some element of the story that feel misogynistic 😅

I bought all of these in the past few weeks and can’t decide what to start on. For context i’m 22F chronically unemployed and depressed and recently got back into reading for escapism and trying to figure my shit out :/
