What do young, single adults want to do for fun in Springfield?

Surely it's recognized by others in this sub that people are consistently asking what to do to find friends, relationships, entertainment in a social setting, etc.

There's a term for this ask: Third places.

(Wiki) - In sociology, a third place is a social space separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and workplace ("second place"). Examples of third places include churches, cafes, bars, clubs, libraries, gyms, bookstores, hackerspaces, parks, and theaters.

Springfield has these things now. Some are used. Some are not. Some tried new ideas that weren't supported to make them economically viable.

Almost all third places exist with operating costs like rent, utilities, insurances, labor, etc.

So what is it that 20-30 year olds want to do that they are willing to pay for that would make a third place viable?

There are real challenges to finding an answer. The economy sucks. Young people drink less than previous generations. Marijuana is legal. Online culture (social media and video games).

I promise this is a question with genuine intent to find answers and I hope people comment with that same open-mindedness and respect.

What do people want to do and how can something realistically exist to meet the needs of those intetests?

AMA with Jay 2.0 - Christkindlmarkt - 8/26

Wednesday - August 26

530p to 730p

Lincoln Library- Downtown

I gave a DSI update at City Council a few weeks ago and word has gotten out about our plans to bring a new holiday experience to Downtown. It was picked up by the media and the response to this news has accelerated our efforts.

This is a big project and we know it will be impactful IF we do it right. For that, we're hosting a community meeting to gather input and support.

We realize not everyone can make these meetings, so we're open to input across all channels.

So people understand this isn't a pipedream, we open up with an overview of what we've started, what's in line so far, and areas we need to discuss.

- Share the project proposal

- Identify site locations, pros, cons, and challenges

- Breakdown of scope of work

- Identify community partners

- Outline programming

After we do this brief presentation, we'll open it up to full discussion. We can lead this discussion to cover all topics, but are open to any and all question.

Im happy to start a discussion here and answer question and take input, too.

Onboard Computer Log

2012 Honda Accord LX-P

My son bought the used car with 96k on the odometer. Three weeks later he experiences some issues and stops by O'Reilly and the pull the diagnostic codes.

In this process, the report shows the car's mileage is actually 174,000, not the 96,000 on the odometer.

My question is does the car's onboard computer log each time a reading is taken?

Trying to understand how this could happen in any other way besides odometer fraud.

Additional side info. Nothing was off on the CarFax. We plan on taking it back to the car lot, but aren't hopeful. Next step is to file a complaint with the IL Secretary of State.

Breaking News: Parking Meter Removal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 8, 2026

Amanda Brown

217-789-2235

City of Springfield to Remove Downtown Parking Meters

Springfield, Illinois – The City of Springfield will begin removing parking meters from the downtown area as part of an ongoing effort to beautify downtown and create a more welcoming experience for residents and visitors alike.

Parking downtown is free and will continue to be free. Parking signs will continue to designate the amount of time motorists have in a parking space.  Parking enforcement officers will continue to patrol the downtown area and enforce the timed parking zones. Motorists are encouraged to look for signage stating the time allowed in each parking zone.

Downtown Springfield, like many downtown areas across the nation, continues to evolve, and the City hopes these improvements encourage more people to come downtown to shop, dine, conduct business, and enjoy the many cultural and entertainment opportunities available throughout the area. Timed parking zones remain necessary to maintain movement throughout the downtown area.

This effort is part of the City’s ongoing work to continue progress on the Downtown and Medical District Master Plan in collaboration with the Downtown Alliance.

The City will continue to provide updates throughout the parking meter removal process.
