The Ratcatchers of Spittle-Fields by Cuernoblanco Studio

This is probably the strangest little RPG supplement I've made so far, and one I'm particularly proud of.

The Ratcatchers of Spittle-Fields started with two things: an ongoing campaign where rats seem to be absolutely everywhere and the only friendly NPC we've encountered so far was a ratcatcher, and my love for the strange failed careers of Into the Odd and Electric Bastionland. Of course, that trail eventually led back to the legendary Ratcatcher career from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

So I started wondering: what if ratcatchers weren't just people who killed rats?

The result is a DCC-inspired supplement about the ratcatchers of a grim Victorian-style city, including:

16 unusual breeds of rats

Ratcatcher occupations and advancement

A secret society guarding the mysteries beneath the city

Two versions of the dreaded Rat King

Oswald Fink, Spittle-Fields' most famous ratcatcher

Adventure hooks, rumors, omens, and optional rules

It's designed for Dungeon Crawl Classics, but most of the material should be easy to steal for any old-school or weird-fantasy game. All the art used in the document is public domain.

It's Pay What You Want on itch, so if this sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd love for you to give it a look.

And if you download it and use anything from it at your table, I'd genuinely love to hear what happens.

NEW ELECTRIC BASTIONLAND ADVENTURE: A NIGHT AT THE GALLOWS THEATRE

I made a 16-room Electric Bastionland dungeon about a theatre that has been performing the same play for three years

I've just released A Night at the Gallows Theatre, an Electric Bastionland adventure.

The premise:

A mysterious theatre has been performing the same unnamed play every week for three years.

There are no reviews.
No records of the performers.
No one remembers buying tickets.

The PCs, however, have tickets with their names on them.

And they're not there to watch the performance.

The adventure grew out of an actual Electric Bastionland campaign I ran, where one of the characters became indebted to the Gallows Theatre. I liked the idea enough that I eventually turned it into a full location.

The other big influence was the very simple dungeon design approach used by Chris McDowall: a relatively small number of interconnected rooms that give players plenty of opportunities to choose their own path.

And, inevitably, once I decided to make it a mysterious early-20th-century theatre, my brain went straight to The King in Yellow, Call of Cthulhu, Pelgrane's games, and even Arkham Horror also found their way into the inspiration pile.

The result is 16 rooms divided between Front of House, Stage, Backstage, and Understage.

It's available for free here:

I'd be particularly interested in hearing from other Electric Bastionland referees: what makes a good EB dungeon/location for you?

The Astronomicon Dwarfica - self promo

I turned an in-joke from my DCC campaign into a dwarven astronomy book

This started during my weekly DCC game.

Our Judge showed us a moon stone, and my character immediately improvised the existence of the Moon Dwarves, an ancient ancestor race from which all dwarves supposedly descend.

Then another player, Elbo the Elf, decided to explain the occasional appearance of new stars: apparently halflings are flying around in enormous balloons, poking holes in the sky and selling updated navigation charts.

The joke kept coming back in our sessions.

So I eventually turned it into a proper piece of lore.

The Astronomicon Dwarfica is an in-universe dwarven compendium covering:

  • Moon Dwarf creation mythology
  • Dwarven theories about the stars
  • Constellations and their prophecies
  • Astrological rituals
  • Salt Dwarven whalers and shipwrights
  • The vanished Moon Dwarves
  • Dwarven superstitions
  • Scholarly arguments and contradictory traditions
  • And, naturally, the Great Cartographic Conspiracy

It's system agnostic, although DCC was the original inspiration.

It's also Pay What You Want on itch.io.

I wrote the whole thing as if it were a translated dwarven manuscript, complete with different authors, annotations and increasingly questionable footnotes.

If anyone wants to know why Elbo the Elf is apparently an authority on dwarven astronomy, I can explain. 😄

[Fan-made Case File] The Last Reel: A Hollywood Noir Murder Mystery for Blade Runner RPG

I've just released a fan-made Case File for the Blade Runner RPG: The Last Reel.

The idea started with a simple question: Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles, so why not do a case about Hollywood?

The adventure is heavily inspired by Ed Brubaker's The Fade Out and classic Hollywood noir, but adapted to the Blade Runner universe. A dead actress, a washed-up screenwriter framed for her murder, a studio fixer, Replicant doubles, political blackmail, and a conspiracy hiding behind the cameras.

It's designed around the Asset Pack, for up to 4 Blade Runners + 1 GR and uses the official case-file structure and time/Countdown mechanics.

I've made two editions:

The regular edition: cheap, fully illustrated/laid out version.

The printer-friendly edition: Pay What You Want, designed for home printing.

You can find me on Itch as Cuernoblanco Studio or cuernoblanco(dot)itch(dot)io

I'd love to hear what other Blade Runner GRs think, especially if anyone ends up running it.
