On the Nickel

I’m relistening to Tom’s discography in chronological order, maybe the third time I’ve done this with intentionality, and I just reached On the Nickel. I’m struck with the thought that this was the first of many times where the gravel voiced carnival barker found true emotional connection. It’s a deeply moving song, especially as I’ve had multiple family members who ended up on the nickel in Los Angeles.

It’s a work of genius.

New to craft bourbon

Yesterday a redditor on r/whiskey suggested I pair my book collecting with my sampling of new to me bourbons - craft, allocated, bottled in bond or barrel strength. I thought it was a fantastic idea, so today I’m doing a small flight of newly opened bottles while diving into Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which I first read before the film was made.

Coincidentally the bottles are in order of preference with both Blanton’s and Michter’s in a close tie for second.

Savage and Cooke is the clear favorite.

Just getting started with whiskey. How’d I do?

My dear departed aunt ethyl left me a list from her death bed.

Edit: That headline should say “just getting started with (craft) Bourbon”. My dear aunt ethyl would be embarrassed by the error.

Took a water fitness class at the gym

I was in a pool full of aging boomers. It was surreal. I enjoyed the class a lot and will go back, but the window into the future was off-putting.

Maybe I’ll sign up for yoga with millennials to recapture my youth.

Two thrift runs, 12 Dell paperbacks from the 1970’s.

At least 8 of 12 have pristine spines. Most printed in 1976. My guess is that someone bought the books 50 years ago and kept on a library shelf.

These are the versions I read as a teen in the 1980’s, so they hold a lot of nostalgic value.

I bagged them up for safe keeping and have put them into my personal library.
