so who's skipping the crimson eye event this year now that we can turn it off?

title. i'm noping out completely. i've been against community events since their inception, but i played along for a while and got really bored. so now that we can turn them off, i'm going to keep them off. anyone else doing this?

NOTICE: if you like the events and want to play them, good for you. i don't. have your fun, and i'll have mine. i won't shit on you for playing them/liking them, if you don't shit on me for not.

let us block more than 10 tags and require more accurate tagging.

i'm tired of sorting through oceans of games i have no interest in. so, so many first person view games, roguelikes, incremental games and even if you block tags, the featured page will still show them to you as if you hadn't. even does this with ignored publishers. new ubisoft game? no thanks, i blocked them i don't want their games clogging my view, and here they are anyway... but let me get to my point.

i don't want to see oceans of games of genres/subgenres i don't personally enjoy. i DO want to see genres i DO enjoy. but it's hard to find metroidvanias when i have to sift through 50 roguelikes to see it. "so block the roguelikes tag." i did. it doesn't help. and here's why.

do you know how many various rogue related tags there are? at least 5. roguelike, roguelite, action roguelike, traditional roguelike and roguelike deckbuilder. unfortunately, not all roguelikes use the roguelike tag, but instead use the one specific to their game. now, i do enjoy roguelikes, sure. i play binding of isaac, how many dudes is fun, deep rock galactic: survivor is amazing. but there's so many of them now.

the same goes for first person games. i have a select few i play, but i don't love first person games because i get motion sick easily when playing them, so i thought blocking the "first person" tag would do the job. nope! because a lot of first person games don't even have a relevant tag!

one of the best solutions i can find is to just let us block more than 10 tags. it shouldn't be that hard to do.

AMD GPU driver help

i've been experiencing freezes/crashes, and a friend of mine seems to think they may be GPU related, because she had some when she used mint and she remembers them getting fixed with a driver update. i told her i updated mine already, and she told me it depends on if i'm using the proprietary or open source. i'm using proprietary.

so i go to look for the open source drivers and i find that they're discontinued, and that Mesa is what's being used now? i have a bunch of mesa stuff installed already though. i think i got lost somewhere along the way?

where's the open source drivers? also, do i need to uninstall the proprietary ones? if so, how do i do that?

also please tell me i don't have to compile anything. i've never done that, and the mesa thing looked super messy to me with my first timer eyes.

aunt has dementia. i'd like some insight.

some context for how we came to the discovery. back in 2020, i had an issue with my living situation, so she let me stay with her for a year until my new place was ready to move into. over the course of that year, she fell multiple times, and she was already known to fall. but having stayed with her and seen her behavior firsthand, i noticed she would scroll through static TV channels with a sort of dazed look on her face. she'd also sleep a lot during the day. she'd mix up her medications too. she was able to cook for herself at the time, but her independence was beginning to decline. she didn't want me to stay with her, and frankly, i have enough health issues of my own to the point i couldn't take care of her properly myself (spina bifida occulta, a hole in my lower spine), so when my new place was ready, i moved.

fast forward a few months and in 2022, my dad calls to let me know she's been put into a nursing home due to having fallen and hurt herself enough that she needed full time care for a while. then they started noticing that she wasn't really improving much physically, and her cognitive abilities were declining too. good days and bad days. so the limited stay in the nursing home became indefinite, and as her decline continued, permanent.

i don't know enough to accurately determine what stage she's at, though going off what i do know, i'd say mid/late? out of her siblings, she's the only one left alive, with my mom dying in 2017, her oldest brother dying a couple years ago, and her last brother dying at the end of may this year. no one told her about the most recent death because she keeps forgetting any of them are dead at all, so telling her would just upset her, only for her to forget about it all in a matter of minutes. worth mentioning that i also went to see her on my birthday on the 14th of this month, with my dad having seen her just 2 days prior, and not only did she forget he came to see her, she thought i was the first person to come see her since she'd been there. i also told her that it was my birthday when i had first arrived, only for her to completely forget when i told her again before i left.

i know things are only going to get worse. that's all they've been doing for the last few years, and i've seen enough death to know a "point of no return" when i see it in an average person, let alone someone with dementia. for now, though her long and short term memory is failing, she still recognizes people, and she's still the person i remember her being. that spark of who she is, remains.

i've never dealt with dementia before. it's hard to see someone i care about go through decline as it is, even harder to see it like this. so i've considered stopping visits after a certain point. she's likely already forgotten that i came to see her at all, but she still knows who i am. it already feels like visiting her won't do anything for her long term emotional well being. but once she stops remembering even who i am, i'm not sure there's any point. like i said, it's hard enough to see her like that for me. once she forgets who i am, it would be even more difficult to see her. am i wrong here? would i be justified? my dad told me that even if she doesn't remember seeing me, that i'd be going for my own sake. i agree. it's nice seeing her, even if it is painful. i'm just trying to figure out if there's a point where it's more painful than pleasant. for me, i think that point would be AFTER she stops remembering me.

i know dementia isn't a straight line and that other health complications can exist. they do for her. so i don't know when or even if that point will come before the end, and i know there's no real timeline, and i'm not looking for one anyway. it just sucks that it's like this.

what version of the duke nukem theme did civvie use?

civvie uses a version of the duke nukem theme as his outro for... i think most of his duke nukem videos, but he for sure used it in his video "PRO NUKEM: MANHATTAN PROJECT". i haven't played much duke nukem, so i don't know what version this is from. i know it's not the original 3D version and it's for sure not the forever version. is it a fan remix? i just want it to listen to. :3

as a metroid fan, my heart rejoices at this ghost name.

https://preview.redd.it/lqywqtt4qrkh1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8d768ee783cd5748f4a5df2873ffb6ae6ff546a

for those that don't get it, when metroid released on the NES in the US, they removed the save system and used a password system instead. and putting in the password JUSTIN BAILEY ------ ------ gives you most of the game's major items, several energy tanks, a bunch of missiles, starts with both sub bosses dead, and samus is in a one piece leotard with boots and bare legs, as well as green hair and pale skin due to having the varia item.

odd deildegast behavior

i had a deildegast that was acting weird. i was playing a custom 14x game. i think the only things not bringing it to 15x was having fog weather, all hiding spots and 75% player speed. so i go in and i'm 0 sanity right from the start. i'm on tanglewood, and i head straight for the closet in the foyer. ghost starts a hunt and it's fast. full speed deildegast. i don't know that yet though, so i try to figure out what it is. i'm thinking either deildegast or thaye, so i call the ghost to my position, use incense, and once it stops hunting, i go and throw some stuff. next hunt comes, ghost is slower. i'm on 150% ghost speed, and it sounds almost as if it was a normal speed ghost on normal ghost speed. so, massive drop.

at this point, i'm already assuming deildegast, that was too high a drop in speed to be a thaye. so i go outside to get some equipment to do some objectives, come back in, hide, and another hunt starts... at full speed. now i'm questioning just what the fuck is going on. i start thinking "wait, is this a gallu and i misread it?" (note: i have a general idea of how gallu's work, but it thought maybe something changed or something was off.) i even think "wait, the skipped steps, is that just from having to readjust from running into walls or is it actually slow speed?" and when it went into the basement, it sometimes almost sounded like it got slower. so now i'm wondering if maybe it was a hantu. i'd considered obambo, but the speed shifts were happening WAY too fast for that.

it had moved to the basement, so i decide to head down there with it. it events me in the basement hiding spot, and not wanting it to hunt on top of me, i smudge it. then i decide to throw some more things, see if it slows down. next hunt rolls around, and it's slow again. now i'm wondering if maybe it's just twins with odd RNG. higher speed was way too fast for twins, but still. then the NEXT hunt starts, and it's fast yet again. so now i'm assuming "wait, it's only slow when i smudge it? maybe it is a gallu and they changed how it works? is it bugged?" so i smudge it two more times, but this time, it doesn't slow down on the next hunt at all.

i'm finally done with the guessing game. obviously something is either bugged to hell, or there's a hidden ability that i'm VERY unaware of. i get in the truck, close the door, and wait for the results. sure enough, deildegast. so, my question is this. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL HOT, CRISPY, KENTUCKY FRIED FUCK!? is this a weird ability of the deildegast? the cheat sheet (the zero network one) doesn't list anything about it in the ghost behavior if so. or was it a bug?

need help playing on linux.

so i ditched windows and moved to linux. the transition hasn't been without some hickups, but i'm managing.

but phas is giving me a LOAD of problems on linux. i know some of the issues i'm having such as losing audio is a unity issue that's linux specific because it happens in other unity games for me. but sometimes the game really REALLY lags my whole PC, and it's always on either the black "initializing" screens or on results screens. so leaving a contract in any way is a risk. some days it runs smooth, some days it's like walking on legos.

now, with some games, switching to a different version of proton has fixed things such as controller issues. and i'm wondering if maybe phas might work better on a different one too. OR, if maybe there's something else i can do to fix these issues.

now, before anyone gets cheeky in the comments, let me "inb4" you.
yes i know phas wasn't built with linux in mind, and the devs aren't actively trying to make it work on linux. yes i know the game is buggy as all hell. i've been playing it for years, this isn't news to me, you don't have to preach to the choir. no, i don't want to "just play something else". i DO play other things. but i also enjoy playing phas when it's not utterly FUBAR. no, i'm not going back to windows.

so, if anyone has any actual suggestions, or knows what to do, please, i'd like some help.

EDIT: i should have specified that i'm using mint. i'll try some of the things suggested here already. hopefully something works.

looking for an audio editor

i used to use audacity, then moved to dark audacity once the data collection claims started. that was when i had windows though, and i don't know if i can run the windows installer for dark audacity on linux, or if it would even work. i don't really want to go back to basic audacity due to the data collection claims either.

what i'm looking for really is something to let me just, edit audio. splice, move, add echo, change pitch, change speed, etc. BUT if nothing else, i'd at least like a way to record my desktop audio. i know OBS can do it, but i think it only does it as a video file, and i'd still need something to convert that to audio so i'd be back to square one anyway.

it's common for me to see news about new games in the news section of my library (which i also wish i could permanently disable btw) for games that i don't own, simply because i own another game that dev/publisher has released, and i'm honestly tired of that.

and even then it gets taken further, games like doom advertising the newest game right on the title screen or main menu. power wash sim did the same thing for it's sequel as well. i suppose it could be acceptable if it also includes news about the game you do own, but that would be easy to exploit. "to celebrate this new game, the one you already own and wouldn't need to buy again will be 10% off!" thanks for that conrad stevenson's paranormal P.I. i needed to buy another copy of the game i already bought.

and then there was evoland where years after the game's release, the dev updated it to include ads for their other games.

i would rather not see it ever, but i'm even willing to accept a compromise. allow it by default, but also let us opt out of seeing ads for games we don't own through our steam library with games we do own.

i get that it might be difficult to stop devs from advertising their other games WITHIN their own game, but i would love to see that too if possible. seeing it happen only makes me NOT want to buy the new game, because it feels so disrespectful.
