1870 5 Pesetas of Spain - an obverse with a 1,500+ year old inspiration

Picture from my personal coin collection

In 1868, the Glorious Revolution of Spain led to the overthrow of Queen Isabella II and establishment of a provisional government. The change of government brought about a change of coinage - no longer would Isabella's portrait be featured on Spanish coins, but instead, a new obverse was chosen - Hispania, the personification of Spain, with her feet resting near the Rock of Gibraltar and reclining on the Pyrenees, the natural border between Spain and France.

This design however, was not an original. It was first struck as an denarius by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the ~130s AD to commemorate his travel to the province of Hispania, his home province, and as part of the "Travel Series" of coins commemorating his travels throughout the Roman Empire.

This use of Roman inspired motifs and symbols was widespread in 18th and 19th century Europe, used by both emperors (such as Napoleon) and revolutionaries (such as the French Republic) to tie back to the classical world.

Her contemporary monarchs were Frederick the Great of Prussia, Catherine the Great of Russia, Louis XV of France and George II of Great Britain and Ireland. She gave birth to 16 children in 19 years, one of her youngest being the future queen of France, Marie Antoinette. Against such competitors and busy family life, she held her own, drawing Austria-Hungary into the global Seven Year’s War, while reforming and modernizing the Austrian bureaucracy.

These original, non-restrike thalers date to her reign, with two variants, in an armored bust as well as in a dress, representing her leadership both in war and peace.

“The steamship Paraná, which sailed from France to South America, ran aground and sank near Bahia, Brazil, on October 7, 1877, carrying a cargo of Uruguayan silver coins fresh from the Paris Mint. The coins were salvaged and sent on to Uruguay, but the government rejected them as tarnished and oxidized, so they were returned to Paris to be melted and re-coined into 100,000 pesos of new coins. Those new coins are the 1878 pesos like we see here, nicknamed "shipwreck pesos" (pesos naufragios) and now prized by collectors.”

Original mention of the roommates found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Andoche_Junot

As translated from Marmont's memoirs:

"So here we are in Paris, the three of us: Bonaparte unemployed, me without a job regular authorization, and Junot attached as aide-de-camp to a general whom they did not want to use, lodged at the Hotel de la Liberté, rue des Fossés-Montmartre; spending our lives at the Palais-Royal and at shows, having very little money and no future."

Marmont's memoirs found here: https://archive.org/details/mmoiresdumarchal27427gut

Madame Junot in her memoirs also recalls Bonaparte and Junot in Paris:

"Junot often used to speak of the six months they passed together in Paris at this time."

She goes on to mention that Junot would give part of his allowance to the unemployed Bonaparte during this time, spending the rest on vingt-en-un, or "21" i.e. blackjack.

Madame Junot's memoirs found here, pg 81-82: https://archive.org/details/memoirsofmadamej01abra/page/82/mode/2up
