Staring new players

When you are starting new players in PB, do you generally give them pre-gen characters that you know will have the skills for the scenario, or do you spend session zero rolling up characters?

There is some knowledge that comes out of the "why" behind some character attributes and the ideas around DR ratings and skill rolls. However this is also a time that can kinda drag on a bit if you are the kind of person who wants to just dig into the story.

What's everyone's experience? This is common for all TTRPGs, but I didn't know the success rate one way or another for getting new PB players engaged.

Goodwill haul

I found a big bag of used crayons at Goodwill for $3. So I got it and sorted thru it. I found the usual no-name, roseart, and other crayons, but the majority were Crayola. In fact, I found crayons from three distinct eras of the company. I even found the no-longer-so-rare dandelion color and the fun mac-n-cheese.

A3 Process

*Discussion*

The is a process developed by Toyota for problem solving that keeps everything on one A3 sized (11"x17") piece of paper. This forces the writer to cut out all but the necessary parts and data. I think of this when looking at one page RPGs and scenarios. I've seen a lot of (8.5"x11") trifold scenarios for r/mothershiprpg but I'm sure there are many others.

Is there any process that has worked well for those who have developed one page RPGs on what to include and what to leave out? How small do you make the fonts to get everything in? How much art do you include.

I'm clearly new to this, but excited about applying this to other TTRPGs out there, especially new ones where community content is slim. Let me know your thoughts and good examples that illustrate specific ides.

thanks, and may all your rolls be crits!

I built a free, open-source VTT that runs inside your Obsidian vault. Atlas VTT is out now!

Hey everyone 👋

My virtual tabletop plugin for Obsidian is finally out. I posted about Atlas VTT here a long while back, so some of you might remember it 😅

I've always loved Obsidian for worldbuilding and for running my TTRPG sessions, but I never liked having my work split between Obsidian and a separate VTT that made my DM notes awkward to reach mid-session.

Atlas is an open-source, hackable virtual tabletop that lives inside your vault. You can pin existing notes to places on a map, connect Fantasy Statblocks entries to tokens, and nest maps inside other maps. Fog of war, distance measurement and the rest of the usual tools are all there.

No telemetry, no hidden costs and free forever. Your creative output stays yours, in a format as open and durable as actual paper.

If you'd be down to help make Atlas the best and most player friendly virtual tabletop out there please join the community discord I created for it to report bugs and feature requests and to chat about Atlas and TTRPGs in general :)

Start Set Acquired! Where should I start?

I got the Starter Box Set today. I have read a lot of the free preview guide of the Core Rules book, and the free ROG day stuff. I'm interested in the ship-2-ship combat, so I might read that first them just to character creation and run a simple adventure with me and a couple others as a learning exercise.

This system seems well suited to a learn-as-you-go game, so I might take part of an adventure and just try it out.

How did everyone else get themselves and other started?

Ash

So in reading various sources about Ash, I'm a little confused. In one description it was like a protoplasm, others it's a powder. It needs to be processed from the zombies into this powder or goo. Which is it? Drink it, snuff it, eat it?

Then the amount. In the preview corw rules it said the standard "dose" was from one zombie and was 5 POUNDS? Um, th game would need to pause to allow th characters to eat that much.

Can anyone clarify for me?

Which purchase to start with?

I have played MANY TTRPGs over the years from D&D 1e, Mothership, Mork Börg, Blades in the Dark, and more. One of the challenges is getting the right starting source material so you can quickly understand the system and get an interesting game going that will hook the players (no pun intended).

That said, I'm trying to determine if the Pirate Börg Starter Set or the Core Rules will be a good starting point to get a game going with players, while also minimizing my "homework" as GM.

I have the Starter Set on hold at my FLGS, but wanted to ask the game veterans to get everyones thoughts. Let me know.

Starter Set vs Core Rules?
