How would you recommend getting to the museum of Science and Industry from Downtown car-free?

Options I have found are:

  • Take the 6 bus directly there.
  • Green Line > 51st > 15 bus
  • Metra Electric

I'm really curious about the Metra Electric, but i've heard the metra trains tend to be unreliable outside of the 9-5 worker morning inbound and evening outbound Weekday schedule.

However, I have read that Metra Electric has better frequencies than some of the other lines. Also heard that the RI line is going to be piloted for "regional rail." Essentially, is the metra electric worth it for a trip like this or is the 6 bus just the best direct option?

Are you aware of the STAR:LINE movement to vastly improve regional transit in the Chicago Region?

I wanted to share this article that lays out a multi-phase plan to implement a "central-subway" system that is very practical and could have considerably virtuous impacts on our transit system.

EDIT2:
If you find this as something you want to push for, absolutely write a letter/email to your Alderperson, Illinois House Rep, Illinois Senator, Congressional House Rep, and your State senator.

What are good local resources for the citizenship test?

My wife is coming up on the 3 year mark as a permanent resident!

We are ready to take the citizenship test and put in the application. However, we just moved here and are looking for some insights on resources.

Such as lawyers(if needed) or any folks here think it is pretty straight forward to apply yourself.

Why is there not more talk about adding new lines or extensions after the red line extension is completed?

I think it's very important we keep thinking about what's next. I'm super excited for NITA, and I'm glad there is a focus on increasing service frequency and quality in the network.

However, it's super important we keep improving connectivity of our rail systems such as connecting brown line to blue line in the north. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times, but we need a serious talk about connecting lines outside the loop.

One point about this that's very important, is the skills required to build these systems need to be retained. These folks working on these builds are gonna get better and more efficient, we need to keep them working and skilling up.

Are walk-ins allowed for the Shedd Aquarium Illinois Free Resident Hours?

Tomorrow the Shedd aquarium has a free night, however, tickets are not able to be reserved online.

There was a similar situation with the art institute and I was able to walk in and get tickets right there.

Are there Healthcare Software Engineer Jobs in Downtown?

Not currently looking for work, but I'm just curious as I moved here recently. I am living downtown and work remote as a Software Engineer in Healthcare and have about 5 years of experience. (But have 10 years of relevant experience as I worked in automation systems prior).

Just curious if anyone here is familiar with or works in healthcare as a software engineer downtown. I might hunt for some roles as I feel my salary (120k) is a bit low, despite being very comfortable because our condo we owe outright.

Why are there so many duplicate responses to questions posted on reddit?

When I see posts, there are so many people that seem to clearly just be typing what the most upvoted post is.

When is the best time to go to the Chicago French market?

I went there at 10am on Saturday because I was getting a haircut and it seemed empty.

Just curious if it gets busy on certain days or times.

For those who moved here from the south, have you noticed a difference in the how competent individuals are?

I moved here from Columbia, SC recently and am so much happier living here without a doubt. I am especially grateful to be car-free.

One thing I have noticed though, is people seem to be more cognizant and overall more competent. It's hard to describe, but the average person just seems to be more "awake" if that makes sense.

Many times living in different parts of the south, I dealt with a lot of individuals that just seemed not very sharp in general.

Just curious if others have a similar experience or maybe some insights into why there seems to be such a discrepancy.

EDIT: I should note that these are my experiences "on average." It seems that the average person here particularly in customer service, is leaps and bounds above almost anything I got in the south. On average.

EDIT2: I'm starting to think much of it has to do with brain drain/gain dynamics.

For those who moved here and ditched the car, did you become more fit? I'm just curious to hear some anecdotes on how this lifestyle changed your weight and physical fitness.

For those moving from out of state, how long did the criminal background check take?

I'm moving from SC to Chicago this week. Or at least I should be.

I'm entirely approved for income, identity and all that. However, since the 26th, my criminal background check has been pending.

Just curious what timelines folks have experienced in the process.

My move-in date is supposed to be Friday 6/5. I'm getting my Uhaul on 6/3 to load it up and hit the road on 6/4.

I have a lot of things lined up depending on this to go through on time such as selling my car on Tuesday, hotel for family helping me move etc.

So basically just trying to get experiences from others who have moved out of state recently how long this time frame was to get the approval back.

To say I'm a bit stressed would not be an exaggeration lol.

EDIT: My property manager got back to me this afternoon and said we are good to go to move in on Friday! The criminal background check cleared. We will be signing the lease first thing in the morning.
