Can I create separate objects that seamlessly use edges of another object to define it, thereby making changes to the first object, change the shape of the second object?

Railings are on an elevated rim

The elevated ledge would need its exterior faces to seamlessly extend the external contour of the hull

Edges are sharp to hopefully support a seamless add of another object perfectly aligned to its edge

I've been thinking of how you'd make objects with several variations of it derived from a base model. One thing that came to mind that would be good to have interchangeable versions of would be the railing design. I could have a version with no ledge, a version with a ledge, or a version with a ledge and the railings for example.

Does anyone know if it's possible have a separate object that is defined by the hull's edge? I'd want to basically be able to reshape the hull and have it also reshape the ledge with railings as a separate derived object. As seen in the real pic, the new object would need to appear continuous on the exterior although its separate.

I'm trying to do this because I find the more detailed I get on a mesh, the more impossible it is to change things, and of course I'm also just curious how to best prepare a model for swappable variations. Right now the hull is a nice flat mesh on top and easy to reshape. If I have that mesh include the ledge, that's even more vertices and edges to make sure I select to change anything minor. If I don't want the ledge, I'd have to remove a ton of vertices or move them downward.

Hope you see what I'm trying do here!

I'm on Clear Skies preset. Do mountains have gusts? Is this altitude too high? I've noticed some other planes over flat terrain doing this on Clear Skies as well though.
