Strawberry Rainbows and Cutts

Strawberry Rainbows and Cutts

I fished Strawberry, targeting rainbows, and caught a bunch of nice cutthroat but only one bow. I graphed a good number of fish in relatively shallow water, but most fish will be moving deeper now as we head into the dog days of summer. I caught many fish using a homemade lure I pounded out of a brass bar. Lots of fun.

Base camp in the rocks near Capitol Reef National Park

I spent three days, with this as base camp as I explored the backcountry NW of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, USA. The site has amazing rock formations that my kids love to climb on. The are is very scenic, with views that rival the nearby national parks.

The site is accessible via a dirt road that has big rocks and deep sand, so I'm glad I had a high-clearance 4X4.

The site is undeveloped. There is a rock firepit but no other facilities or services, and there is no fee to camp. We brought our own water and portable toilet.

Utah is in a drought. The area is very dry and wildfire danger is high. Campfires are not allowed except in developed campgrounds with established fire pits. We bought a propane stove for cooking.

This site is located along the Sand Creek Road, on the south slope of Thousand Lake Mountain. There are several other spots to camp along the road but this is the best, in my opinion. You've got to search a little to find it. There is a scenic little waterfall farther up the road.

The area is big and rugged. I wish I had another week to spend exploring here.
