2nd cast at Pineview.

I'm so proud of this kid! We'd been nailing the cats all day. Decided to try our luck on bass. First cast, he let it sink and a cat immediately hit. Finally got it off the hook and he throws out. Almost as soon as he hit the water this tiger muskie hit. The look on his face, priceless.

Strawberry Rainbows and Cutts

I fished Strawberry, targeting rainbows, and caught a bunch of nice cutthroat but only one bow. I graphed a good number of fish in relatively shallow water, but most fish will be moving deeper now as we head into the dog days of summer. I caught many fish using a homemade lure I pounded out of a brass bar. Lots of fun.

I am planning on heading over to Pineview soon to try to catch some crappie. Does anyone know a good place to fish from? I've never been there before.

Are we doing enough to protect Utah fisheries from overharvest?

I’m not trying to start a “nobody should ever keep fish” argument. Legal harvest is part of fishing, and there are definitely situations where keeping fish is fine or even encouraged depending on the species and waterbody.

But I’m starting to wonder if Utah reservoirs are getting hit harder than people want to admit, especially with more pressure, more people fishing, more social media attention, and very little visible enforcement at a lot of the places people fish.
My concern is not someone keeping a legal meal of fish.

My concern is:
People not knowing the water-specific regulations
People keeping fish over slot limits or size limits
People stacking multiple limits in a day
People keeping bass, walleye, trout, perch, etc. without understanding how different reservoirs are managed
Very few visible license/limit checks at popular reservoirs
More pressure every year while drought and low water already stress fish populations

DWR obviously manages harvest very differently depending on the water. Some places have increased limits because water levels are dropping and fish may not survive anyway. Other places have slot limits, special rules, or species-specific limits because the population needs protection. That only works if people actually know the rules and there is some realistic chance of enforcement.
I fish a lot of northern Utah reservoirs, and I almost never see wardens/DNR checking coolers, livewells, licenses, or limits. Maybe I’m just missing it, but it feels like enforcement is basically invisible at a lot of these places.

Again, I’m not anti-harvest. Keep fish legally. Eat what you keep. Don’t waste fish. But if everyone treats public reservoirs like unlimited grocery stores, eventually the quality of fishing is going to suffer.

I’d like to see more:
Visible checks at ramps and popular shore spots
Better signage at reservoirs with special regulations
More education around slot limits and species-specific rules
Anglers calling out obvious violations instead of ignoring them
More people voluntarily releasing fish that are valuable to the fishery, especially larger breeding-size fish

Curious what others are seeing. Are people getting checked where you fish? Do you think overharvest is becoming a real issue in Utah, or am I overthinking it?

Mammoth and asay creek

I’m staying near Duck creek and I’m trying to fish mammoth and asay creek but there’s very little access along hwy 89 and along mammoth and asay creek with lots of the roads fenced off with private property signs. Anybody know where the best place is to access these creeks legally?

Lower Bell Reservoir which bait to use?

Planning to go up for some hiking and fishing soon, and was wondering what kind of setup would work best for the fish there.

And if anyone knows the restrictions for Lower Bell like catch limit/release etc

From getting skunked to finally figuring out the Provo River.

From getting skunked to landing my biggest Provo brown yet. Still a beginner, but I’m having a blast learning this sport.

Utah lake

Hey guys, I’ve never gone to Utah lake. Just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share what area they have caught bass in. No boat or kayak. Thanks if anyone has tips! And I’ll take another poke for catfish, any other fish I might find up there?

Lost my net

This is going to be such a long shot, but I’m hoping I can cash in all my luck forever on this.

I fished the first mile of the south fork Ogden River, right below Causey, and somehow, I lost my net. It’s a fishpond blueish/green net with an orange upqua magnet on it. My father gifted it to me for Christmas and it means so much to me.

Ive seen miracles work on reddit before. I’ve never posted, so I’m not expecting much. But please, if you find it, or know someone who got lucky and found a fishpond net, I would be over the moon to have it back!

Thank you all!

Upper Provo Help

I’m coming to Utah for the first time from out of state and am looking to get out and fly fish for a day. I’m wanting to drive up Mirror Lake Highway and fish the Upper Provo in order to get on some eager fish (I don’t care about size) and avoid some of the crowds. I’m planning to visit the Upper Provo Falls first and kind of move up or downstream from there. It’s difficult figuring out where to go when you’re not familiar with the area, so I’m just curious to know if this is a decent plan or if anybody has any advice for certain pullouts along the highway. Thanks!

Mid Provo fish.

17” +. Missed an 22”+. Only my second time there. Healthy fish with big shoulders. Middle Provo holds the bigger browns.

Pineview Reservoir Drawdown

Anyone else pretty bummed about Pineview being drained down for the pipeline work?

I get that infrastructure has to be fixed, but taking one of northern Utah’s better fisheries down that low is just sad. It feels like a lot of fish are going to die or be wasted, and it’s another example of Utah losing good fishing water.

Curious what everyone thinks. Are we overreacting, or is Pineview about to take a serious hit?
