Please suggest a book where infantry squares are used
I’ve been reading about Waterloo and am very interested in reading about other battles where infantry deployed in squares to protect themselves against cavalry. Thanks!

I’ve been reading about Waterloo and I find the infantry squares very interesting. What are some books where they come into play? Thanks!
This is my first time reading the novels and maybe I'm still not used to O'Brian's style, but I don't understand Steven's abrupt decision to join the crew of the Polychrest. He seems to have other plans and then suddenly says he'll see Jack in a week. I listen to audiobooks and sometimes do so while walking, so I sometimes wonder if I've missed something. I listened to it again and it still seem like an abrupt decision
Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m only a casual reader of good literature. I’m curious as to why Joan Didion’s picture is featured in the description of this subreddit. There’s also a literary website that has tote bags featuring her. I looked her up and she seems to be most famous for her memoirs. They sound very good, but why is she a special hero in this subreddit? Thanks!
Hello all!
I recently started the series and am wondering if there are any books I could read for background. There are loads of people running around the ship and I don't have a good idea of how they relate to each other or which ranks would normally be held by gentlemen. I'm hoping for a good biography or some other non fiction history book to give me a little knowledge about life in the Royal Navy at the time of the series. I don't want any of the novels spoiled, so I'm hesitant to read the Patrick O'Brian wiki. I don't want to read some character died before I get to know them.
Thanks!
I was rewatching Master and Commander today and it really is a great movie. I’ve read a couple of the novels as well. Could you recommend similar non fiction books that del with warfare in the age of sail? I’m especially interested in books that go into the society created on board a ship as well as battles. Thank you!
Hi all!
Does anyone know a store where I can find a good bath robe. Summer is suddenly upon us, so I need a lighter material than the one I've been using. I'm looking for a soft, light cotton. I'm not looking for any traditional patterns or designs. I looked on Google, but it just recommended the usual department stores. I'm going to look at Takashimaya, but I was hoping to draw on someone's knowledge of a specialty linens store. Thank you!
This company was advertised in my feed. I went to the website and the shoes looked good and they seemed to have a good idea for fitting the shoes. You take pictures of your feet against a ruler and supposedly that allows them to create a great fit. I don't have any experience with bespoke shoes, so it seemed to make sense at least to my untrained mind. One pair is 400 Euros, so I definitely wanted to check with some more knowledgeable people first. The company is hard to find out about because the name leads to general information on cobblers.
I was also wondering if anyone has recommendations for well made casual shoes. My budget is somewhere around $500 USD.
Thanks for any information you can give me!
I wonder how many people feel the same way about self promotion. Many of the books being promoted are obviously AI slop as well. I would be in favor of banning AI slop completely
I recently met one of my weight loss goals and am going to buy some quality t shirts as a reward. I bought a couple supima cotton ones from Uniqro and wasn't impressed. I'm not interested in any logos or buying a brand, but I'm willing to pay for something that feels a bit luxurious.
Google wasn't much help.
Thanks
The only books I’ve read about this area are from any period are Things Fall Apart and Born A Crime. I really enjoyed learning about Noah’s daily life, so I’d like to read more books like this. Please suggest books about sub Saharan Africa that take place within the last 30 years or so. I’m most interested in non fiction. Thanks!
It seems like there’s been a dramatic increase in self promotion here and all across the Reddit book world. Many of the books seem to be AI slop. I think this would be a better sub without self promotion or if it was limited to one day a week.
I'm going to Kyoto tomorrow and always like to visit French style bakeries when I go to big cities. Are there any places you would recommend? I'll be in the area of Takashimaya, Kyoto Station and Fushimi Inari Shrine.
Thanks for any help!
Pretty much the title. One way I like to relax is to have a bath or shower with a high end soap. I Googled and found places that seemed to only have their own brand. I'm hoping to find a shop that has various soaps from Europe, North America and Japan. Where are my triple milled homies?
Thanks!
I've had two chocolate bars from Dandelion. One was Kpaline 2024 from Togo and the other was Kokoa Kamill 2021 from Tanzania, both 70%. Is Dandelion chocolate usually tangy? That's how I would especially describe the Kamill. I'm still going to try one or two more bars because there is a Dandelion cafe on my usual walking route. Just curious as to whether this is what I should expect from other bars
