WIP Wednesday- Veronica edition, what are you working on right now?

Taking an intermission to do a large piece from Piececool now that I have extra shelves (got a large shelf space to fill up recently). I’ve been avoiding larger metal models due to the lack of space. Planning on doing one of the 3 body problem nooks next after this.

Crescent Hotel by Tonecheer

The second in the 2 part series from Tonecheer’s Chinese lines that depict places from a book series. I sourced this along with Tomb Raider from an Ali listing.

This one depicts the Crescent Hotel… or Tea House. Not sure but there’s a negotiation taking place upstairs and an auction downstairs. The item up for auction can be flipped around to show two costumed characters.

This piece features windows with shutters, a chandelier and a set of accordion doors on the front that latches.

It’s a beautiful piece with lots of character and charm.

Mods:

* painted edges
* added a dust cover as it didn’t ship with one

The Lost Tomb by Tonecheer

This piece from Tonecheer’s Chinese collection is based on a book series called The Lost Tomb. This specific nook has a subtitle of Tomb Raider. Or maybe that’s the title. Im really not sure as it seems to say both things in various places along with the text of “Ten Years of Snowfall”. Other names include Grave Robbers Chronicles.

It’s a simple build that takes less than 12 hours to build, you can get it done in 5 or so limiting yourself to edge painting. I simplified the build somewhat by using jump rings to connect the chains rather than the included wire.

This has a motion or proximity sensor for the light which I’m already severely annoyed with. Just goes off and on seemingly randomly for some reason. Additionally it also comes with a cardstock sleeve for the nook that fits rather well.

I sourced this from Ali myself but you can also find it on the fifijoy website.

It’s a relaxing build and I quite enjoyed it.

Vietnamese Temple by Shalom

More pics and some videos at link

I got this one off of etsy but it is also available through https://halombooknook.com who I believe is the official retailer for it.

It’s a beautiful temple featuring rich mahogany and cherry wood coloring. It has an open interior and a really nice roof construction. The roof is my favorite and most frustrating portion at the same time. The individual pieces are fragile and I snapped at least 6 of them during construction. Thankfully the way they are assembled self reinforces them if you glue them to each other. Absolutely essential to use an exacto knife to cut them out, don’t just pressure pop them.

I wanted to be very respectful of this so decided to lean into the religious aspect of it and include a Buddha statue. Also the unfinished base received a felt liner to help polish it off.

It’s only single sided print so a lot of paint went into it. Used mahogany & cherry furniture markers and a red water based pen marker mostly. The roof was an orange acrylic marker (or rather 4 markers as there was a lot of surface area to cover). I also accented areas with a bronze metallic paint.

Lighting is a set of led strings on a single switch usb-a cord

Mods:

* painted edges, interiors and accents
* added 3 inch Buddha to interior
* added felt to base
* added potted bushes and trees

And that’s all folks!

I have to say that the Alice in wonderland books are some of the most unique ones out there. Just so much imagination smorgasbord to capture in little iconic scenes. This one captures Alice’s tumble down the rabbit hole through an endless hall of books and psychedelic shelves that seem to bend and twist reality. A journey deep into the mad mind.

It’s a beautiful book. With many things to call your eye to and a symmetry that extends endlessly up and down through the use of mirrors on the top and bottom of the nook. The twisting shelves and intentional half done edges on both sides make it feel like it doesn’t repeat, like each section of this library you’re falling through is unique.

Personally the artistry and craftsmanship that I see in Joohour make them a premium creator at ultra reasonable prices.

Also… I used all but 2 of the books in this. There are a lot of books and you can’t mix and match from other kits. The books for C can be used for the extra A stickers. You’ll see what I mean when you get there.

Mods:

* added doorknobs to the 2 doors on the back wall
* painted edges and changed the color on some pieces to make them stand out a little more.

Nothing more than that as it’s already a visual cornucopia of delights.

This little mini-nook is reminiscent of headmaster office and magic office (dumbledores office) but takes its own cozy approach. It also has aspects that remind you of the mirror of desire with the surrounding casement on the face. It’s just cute. Some little details that shine through

* window in the back wall that allows light through

* colored vellum in front of the led to give the fireplace a red glow

* many 3d elements done tastefully

Mods:

* painted edges and interiors like usual.

* added window panes on both sides of the back wall window to protect the velum “glass”

* used old and new books to create variety

And that’s all folks

Thankfully this will fit on one of my short shelves. Woot!!

The soots will rule forever!!!

There are many others who have posted this one with their thoughts and pros/cons. I don’t really have anything to add to that so will simply say. I like this one a lot. It’s got atmosphere, not too hard and not many things I think are a problem.

Things to keep in mind.

* there are lots of extra pieces for all the gearing so if something breaks look for a replacement.

* layering the smaller bands is much easier than cutting and gluing them to the large roller

* the battery boxes become somewhat inaccessible after construction so leave the bottom panel loose and use some painters tape to keep it secure.

Mods:

* replaces the scroll with a modified vinyl print.

* added a PET dust cover to the interior of the large building to protect the vinyl

* added a number of soots (1cm black pompoms with 3mm half beads and a dab of paint)

* added greenery

* painted edges, interiors, even some whole pieces.

* TODO: adding in a no face 3d print. Just waiting on pluck.

Happy Building All.

Ps- for those that reported previous post. Personally I consider this a nook and valid… but opinions differ. I could see this the other way too.
