Hi all! I should've made this post yesterday, but anyway. I test drove a 2017 Toyota Prius Four Touring on Monday at a car sales place. The test drive went pretty smooth, but we noticed right away that the tires have dry rot. The sales person was really insistent that it was a great car with no issues because they don't sell cars like that and wouldn't let me take the car off the lot for more than 30 minutes for a PPI. They were open to me bringing in my own inspector and that inspector could use the lift that was at an inspections place attached to their car sales location.
Inspector comes out, flags the tires as having dry rot, few codes pop up; one related to the 12v battery, the other blind spot monitoring and the last for the navigation system. Spark plugs may need service, rear sway bar is cracked and will need replacement in the near future, there's minor surface rust at the bottom (vehicle came from NY). Other than that everything else came up normal. The rec from the inspector was to get the tires replaced, battery charged and rescanned for the codes, but all in all would be a good purchase.
For some reason, and it may be related to this being a big purchase, I'm hesitant. The dealer would be willing to replace the three tires, and give $100 off for alignment costs, but that's it "for now". After that the car would be sold "as is" so there's no guarantee that you might get with dealerships (5 day return), and I feel like I'll need to invest at least a grand or two to get it nearly as good as new (replace rear sway bar, car detail, spark plugs, fluid flushes). With the dry rot just feels like the car has been sitting around for awhile.
Car has all the amenities I want, mileage is a bit higher than I wanted to start with. 112,000 for $15,200 when you add in the fee. One owner. Car fax provided by the dealer is coming up relatively clean but is missing service records. What are your thoughts here and if I were to purchase should I purchase a warranty? Car is located in Virginia.
