Made my first long distance trip in Sassy B (174 miles, plus more mileage while I was up there) to get to Stowe, VT for British Invasion!
There were a series of setbacks that kept this car off the road, along with my minimal knowledge of working on cars - first timer, did almost everything twice. One of the major setbacks was the engine overheating due to multiple coolant leaks. Oh and snapping the therm housing bolt clean off. I thought that was going to seal my fate of not making it.
Anyway, in the end I made everything work just in time. There is still just a slight leak of coolant happening, but not enough at all to make it an issue.
While at the event, I got to meet a lot of kind, knowledgeable people within the community. Many gave me tips on my car repairs, and what to do next time. Very excited to put those to use.
If anyone here is in the NE area, I recommend heading up there for next year - it’s a good time!
yeah, i know the table is a mess... anywho, the upper trunion and kingpin can be very rusty, and seized together. even after using PB Blast it can be hard to separate so use caution when removing them!
while holding the upper trunion with my right hand and using a relatively heavy metal mallet (not sure the weight, red one in the photo), i hammered down the kingpin and eventually the lower trunion hit the table bouncing the unit upward into my palm. causing a pinch and cutting through a portion of the palm. my swivel vise broke while trying to press in one of the new bushings of the other stub axle - ended up getting a shop press and it worked beautifully.
while, yes, this is my fault, i just want to share so people don't make the same mistake. always use a vise.
EDIT: spelling
Took the battery holder out and found some corrosion - was able to clean it pretty well. Then noticed this bare metal. Unsure if this is fixable, but I did clean it with contact cleaner. Put some fresh batteries in but nothing so far.
Thanks for any, all suggestions!
