The sociopolitical commentary in this episode is as relevant as ever! (Episode 1x07: The Long Game)

I've started re-watching the show (from the 2005 revival), and I am currently at 1x07 The Long Game.

I am amazed by the writing in this episode. (I missed so many things during my first watch years ago) Also, this episode was so much in the territory of Black Mirror. It was Black Mirror even before Black Mirror existed lol.

So, there's an alien and a big corporation that uses **Satellite 5 (**a massive media space station) to feed false information and control the human empire on Earth.

I am surprised how relevant the sociopolitical commentary in this episode is with our current times. (off-course not including the alien bit)

I'd argue that it has probably gotten even worse with Social Media and everything being driven by algorithms, paid campaigns etc.

And the thing is........ it is happening all over the world.

The 5 prominent (female) Doctor Who companions of all time

I honestly believe following 5 are the most prominent women of the show (classic + new who) if we include both in-universe and real-world impact.

  1. Susan Foreman:
    • Original/first on-screen companion. The Doctor's granddaughter (and hence a member of his OG family tree) Only companion to have known him even before he started "traveling"
  2. Sarah Jane Smith
    • One of the most celebrated classic companions across decades. Her legacy transcends the usual arc of companions being strictly tied to a few incarnations. The only companion with her own spin-off. (2 actually, if we count the K9 & Company pilot)
  3. Rose Tyler
    • First companion of the revived series. Most prominent person in the lives of the 9th and 10th. Got her own clone of the Doctor. The oldest weapon in the universe chose her face to help the doctor in making one of the most important decisions of his life.
    • Even the Doctor regenerated into her face (unanswered).
  4. River Song:
    • The Doctor's wife. Has practically met every incarnation. The only one to know his name. His "equal-half" in every sense.
  5. Clara Oswald:
    • The "Impossible Girl", entered the doctor's timestream and saved him on multiple occasion. Got him a new 'regeneration cycle' on-screen. The Doctor went against his own people (and the rules of Time Travel) to save her. Got her own Tardis and is probably out there still traveling.

Edit: Honorable mentions Zoe, Leela, Romana, Tegan and Ace.
(After going through the comments, I definitely agree that this list was a little biased towards NewWho)

Having said that, this is strictly my opinion (based on my understanding of the writing and viewing experience of the show).

It's true that every companion holds a special place in The Doctor's heart, and every companion is significant in their own unique sense, so please do not turn this into a ranking competition or a companion fan-war.

Male Leads get away scotfree every time. But this is the right time to call out Indian Cinema's "Masala Film" Superstars" if we really want things to change.

Sorry for the rant but I find it irritating, disgusting and honestly eye-rolling that every time a controversy around women objectification in films erupt, the male actor somehow gets away unscathed, with absolutely no accountability.

The film has made a mockery of Paralympians too. But that has been brushed aside as well.

I feel this time, it shouldn't happen.

Jhanvi and the filmmakers are correctly called out. But where is Ram Charan in all of this?
Didn't Ram Charan sign up the film too, and charged a heavy fee in crores?

No interview, no tweet, no apology?

I don't care if there is an audience for these kind of films. If there is, then I am sorry to say, they need to evolve or should stay in the minority. This kind of cinema has existed since decades but the increasing "normalization" of this is concerning.

This is not the kind of cinema I want my family and friends to be subjected to, especially when it is wrapped under the facade of "Indian Culture".
I come from a family of young girls and boys, and I am getting sick and tired of watching films where women are treated as objects, or songs where men are repeatedly shown to be outright "groping" or catcalling women.

This problem is not specific to Bollywood, but at least they get called out regularly since 2020, but these so-called "Pan India" superstars get away every time with zero accountability.

They are repeated offenders too.

Just watched Peddi. And it's this snippet from 2017 Actresses Roundtable discussion is as relevant as ever.

This is a snippet from 2017 Actresses RoundTable discussion. Ratna Pathak Shah summed up my thoughts that I am having right now, as I just finished watching Peddi.

I hate the fact that 9 years later, we are still having the same discussion.

Just replace Dabangg with any big, masala film that came out in past 4-5 years, and nothing would change.

While I don't appreciate singling-out just the actress, but privileged nepos like Jhnavi should not be given clean chit.

The existence of these films/scenes should be questioned, and everyone associated it with these should be criticized, and that includes the actress, especially when she already comes from a privileged background.

CJP is a "Digital Opposition" party and IMHO, it should stay that way for a while.

This is my first political post on Reedit. I'm a millennial and I am not even unemployed. But I am still supporting the CJP movement because I am pro-change.

I just hope CJP continues to call out the Govt in power and act as a Digital Opposition.

It can become India's first "Digital Opposition" party. And there is nothing non-democratic about it.

They do not need to enter active politics immediately.
There are a lot of SHARKS in Indian Politics, and they will either consume CJP completely, or derail their movement.

Expecting them to start working on the ground immediately is WILD. This digital revolution is sufficient (at least for now).

Majority of Indian media is also looking for one mistake from their end.
One goof-up.
One loop-hole.
One wrong statement.
And the media will pounce on CJP, and torn it apart.

CJP also should call out the IT Cell bots, paid influencers and troll armies, that are working overtime to depose/defame them.
