Please do better

To the cyclist guy on a bike this morning at 8:30am on Barrington Ave: you need to do better.

In the span of 90 seconds you run three stops signs, including one at a crosswalk in front of a school. After being called out, you sprinted to pass a van and spent about 250m on the wrong lane (luckily there were no cars coming in the other direction)

Behaviour like this obviously puts you in danger, but it also puts everyone around you in danger. And given everything that's going on, it fuels the arguments of those asking to remove bikelines and design Toronto streets just for the benefit of cars.

Please do better.

Help getting .heic files to work?

Hi all,

I've been using Darktable for years. I have it installed in a MacBook Pro running MacOs 14.8.7. I just received a bunch of photos from an iPhone in .heic format... And I can't find a way for Darktable to not give me the skull image.

I've updated Darktable to 4.8.1 (can't go to 5 in Sonoma), I have installed and reinstalled libheif and libde265. I can convert the photos through terminal, and open them in Preview and GIMP without issues.

Claude tells me the issue is that Darktable is loading it's own library bundles instead of the ones installed... But hasn't given me a way to push Darktable to load the right libraries.

Any suggestions on what to try next? I know I can convert the images to TIFF or JPEG and call it a day, but this is really bothering me now...

Thanks in advance

EDIT

Of course the moment I post I find the prompt that gives me the solution. I replaced the libheif and libde265 files in the resources/lib folder and now .heic files work.

How to secure a canoe on a car

I feel this community can help us plan for this.

We've never owned a canoe, and always rent at the camp when we go canoe camping. We now have an opportunity to get one canoe but it's far, far away (two days road trip).

Our car doesn't have roof bars, sin we need to figure out how to securely drive with a canoe for over 1500km, most of it on highways.

Do we absolutely need bars? Or can we use foam and straps setups (like https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/sportrack-foam-watersport-carrier-abr532-0401952p.html and the likes)?

Thank you!

SB online renewal

Hello all!

We have to renew our mortgage this Summer. Got the email from Scotiabank (current lender) saying that we can do everything online.

Has anyone followed that process? I want to know if I can gate a rate through it as a way to keep the offer in case rates go up. We have an appointment with them in 2 weeks.

Hi all!

I need to replace the brake cables in my folding bike (Zizzo Via).

The housing is in good shape. I would normally change it at the same time... However I'm not sure if standard housing does the trick or if it needs to be a special type that will not crack with the folding/unfolding motion.

Any tips from experience? I have no concerns keeping the housing it came with. The reason to change the cable is a clean cut outside the housing.
