Constant car crashes at Golf Rd and Central Park Ave

In the last couple of months there seems to have begun a constant stream of serious car accidents at the intersection of Golf Rd and Central Park Ave. I have noticed at last three since May. Two weeks ago, there was a two-car accident where one car was hit so hard that it *knocked down the streetlight* set 20 feet northeast of the intersection on Central Park Ave. This morning, there are fresh accident debris at the southeast corner of the intersection.

This is a popular intersection for pedestrians in Skokie to reach the Central Ave corridor and for Evanston residents to reach Central Park, and there are many bikers (many children!) who cross Golf north-south as well. It makes me hesitant to cross, knowing that a speeding driver on Golf or an SUV making a right on red might crash into me while waiting for the crosswalk signal. I feel it is a matter of time before a walker or biker are killed.

Like all dangerous streets, the solution is obvious - the speed limit on Golf should be 30 mph, not 40, and there should be pedestrian bump-outs at the light. The difficult part is this road is shared between the Village of Skokie and Evanston. Alas, what is the best way to raise the issue of this increasingly dangerous intersection with city, village, or IDOT?

Lead service line replacement rebate program

I have a lead water service line running from my house to the public water main, so I’ve been getting a lot of mailers from the Village about replacing it.

The letter details two options, but I’m pretty sure it’s leaving out the main differentiator between them: timeline.

  1. Rebate program: I hire a plumber out of pocket and get reimbursed either $750 directly or $1250 through water bill credits. Doesn’t sound like the Village needs to really do anything on the “public side” of the main here.
  2. Cost-share program: Village offers a financing and cost cap program, but fundamentally it’s the Village performing the replacement on their own schedule.

I’d like to have the line replaced by this time next year, so I’m probably looking at the rebate program.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a plumbing company if I wanted to pursue the rebate program? Can you walk me through the process - e.g. did you need to file a permit or get the Village to coordinate anything on the “public side” at the same time your private service line got upgraded?

EES for leaving LIS (non-EU)?

Hello! I’ve read a lot of the horror stories from people trying to leave LIS for a non-Schengen country encountering multi-hour long waits to get through passport control.

I’ve just tried to pre-register my departure in the Travel to Europe app, but it doesn’t work. The message I got from their support: “Please be aware that the Travel to Europe app currently supports pre-registration for arrivals to the following airports : Lisbon, Faro, Porto, Madeira, Lajes, Ponta Delgada and Porto Santo, and it does not support pre-registration for departures or exits from Portugal.

I’m just a little confused since I thought I was seeing people use EES to *leave* Portugal. Is EES used to leave Portugal at all, or does it just not support registering my departure in advance (so I should expect to scramble for the app once I get in line at LIS)?

*Clarification*
This post is specifically about the use of the Travel to Europe app to leave the LIS airport, since this is one of the few airports that uses it for entry into the Schengen area.
