Engine "chugging" at stoplights (hot outside, AC running)

2016 Limited with ~53K miles. owned it a couple months now.

my commute is 14miles, mostly highway. I've noticed in the afternoons - hot outside, engine is fully warmed up after driving 20min on teh highway - when i get stopped at a light near my house, standing on the brake (not shifted into neutral or park) - the engine starts kinda "chugging" and hte car vibrates a little. Not bad, but certainly rougher than the usual "I can't even tell the car is running" smoothness. My AC is on, working great, usually on Recirculate. Not high fan speed, tho.

i've tried turning off the AC/fan, and that seems to help a little, but not sure if it's the problem. usually by the time i start to notice it, the light turns green.

Oh, and i tend to be using Eco Mode. not sure if that matters.

Favorite "Ben lore" bit?

Was re-listening to some of the latter MCU commentaries and the concept that "Ben spent several years dating Nebula-types" - which kinda reared its head again this week wiht the 'yeah, but a girl like Eve hates you and that's so hot" concept. I assume Ben's current wife actually likes him, tho, so it's sequestered into "Ben Lore" at this point.

Ben carried a slingshot around as a kid

Ben's family/friends are from the place that "Out of the Furnace" is about - to which Griffin expresses "I'm sorry to hear that, that is some ROUGH NEWS" (I forget what ep it was a while back)

Ben's family contains someone who is a saint? or was beatified? i forget.

Ben's family goes back a long ways in America and...signed the Constitution? or...owned some important building? some such. i forget but i remember it was something of note. I probably need to relisten to the National Treasure podcasts, i think it was probably related around those.

Death of Robin Hood

i liked it! i look forward to rewatching it with subtitles, as my hearing could not discern some of the early scenes' dialogue (tho, i got the gist)

My only question is about Jodie Comer:

>!Prettiest actress working today?!<

or

>!Most beautiful woman to ever live?!<

Question about Disclosure Day

posted this elsewhere but no traction. hoping y'all can help:

So, in the scene where Josh O'Connor is out in the field calling Hugo, and it's conveyed that >!he's one of the Chosen Two - he can understand the alien language - the call hangs up, and the grass crushes into Crop Circles . WHY DOES THAT HAPPEN? Are we to believe the "aliens are watching and letting him know he's cool by creating crop circles"? Or "he has a power he doesn't understand it's manifesting in crop circles"?!<

I'm old. I like Old Movies. I agree with "the kids" on Disclosure Day

Surf Dracula bullshit

for those who are confused: the premise of this movie is "what happens when the world finds out about aliens? how do they react? does the world change?" . in case you doubt this, there's at least 3 whole conversations about it in the film itself, establishing that dilemma as the big conflict, the big "what if?".

A movie like, say, "Don't Look Up" posits: "How would the world react if they found out there's a meteor coming that will kill everyone?" And you know what, the movie fucking delivers on that - no matter what you think of that movie, it illustrates the thought experiment and shows what would probably happen.

Other examples of "actually fleshing out the hypothetical": the Pluribus TV show (what if hivemind?) , and Torchwood: Miracle Day (What if people stopped dying?).

Those movies and TV shows did not waste their running times with a pointless runaround before establish the inciting incident 5 seconds before cutting to black

Even a movie like Godzilla: King of the Monsters has a montage of news headlines at the end. I mean....you owe the audience *something* after 2.5hrs

Zach is just not in the mood for Bill tonight

Lowe is visibly tired and there's a couple times where he just won't play along with Bill's bit. It's kinda funny

OG Anunoby = David Freese

Freese was out of his mind that entire 2011 postseason run, but obviously had THE MOMENT in Game 6. It didn't clinch the title, but it absolutely shifted the vibe and made those 2011 Cardinals inevitable champs. But as a Cardinals fan, 2011 Game 6's ups and down (Comeback, extra innings, etc) had much the same vibe for me as the OG game on Wednesday.

AND: since that miracle run in 2011, i have not been able to make myself care about the Cardinals' success or failure since. It's never going to get better than the storybook/miracle/whatever season of 2011, it's all gravy.

Freese got traded (at his request, seemingly?) a couple seasons later. I think he had some personal problems and needed a change of scenery. But he's since retired and is back in StLouis, IIRC. Grew up here, local hero, will never have to pay for a dinner again. I hope OG is similarly revered in NYC, even if he struggles 2 seasons from now

spinoff idea: Dr Shack, MD

Dr Mohan goes to New Jersey for a fellowship under the tutelage of enigmatic, abrasive (but undeniably genius) Dr Geoffrey Shack, an iconoclastic diagnostician played by Hugh Laurie

fuck lawsuits, it's a different thing!

David Twohy

Watching The Arrival on youtube and man a Twohy short mini would hit the spot next time they need a breather. .The Arrival, Below, and Perfect Getaway would all be fire episodes (and relatively short, if that's what you're into). Maybe do Warlock (RIP Julian Sands), which he wrote, on Patreon ?

they already covered 3 riddick films on Patreon, so they could could just combine them into one ep and revisit the whole thing. or re-release the patreon eps on Main Feed and take a week off.

I mean, i'm in the bag for any of those 90s Scifi guys - alex proyas, roland emmerich, aronofsky, Paul WS Anderson, etc. doing the Cube trilogy on Patreon is my real white whale but i'm not holding my breath

BMW's "The Hire"

Sean & Amanda on Bandsplain talking about Madonna's acting career, and seemingly neither of them were aware of BMW's The Hire - the series of short films (commercials) directed by auteurs and released on DVD in the early 2000's. John Woo, Inarritu, Joe Carnahan (he had heat!), TONY FUCKING SCOTT, and Guy Ritchie (among others)

It's basically a ripoff of The Transporter, but stars Clive Owen and each short film features a different BMW model, cast, plot, etc. Yasi even breaks down (somewhat inaccurately) Madonna's entry, "Star".

The whole endeavor is a little guy-coded, so i get how Amanda might've missed it (she'd love hte Wong Kar Wai ep, i'm sure) - but it seems especially Sean-coded. i'm sure CR and Shea Serrano are down, do we think Sean was just playing it cool and acting like he didn't know his favorite filimmakers made BMW ads ?

They're all on Youtube. I think this playlist has all of them (but check Wiki to make sure. Apparently Youtube links aren't allowed, so here's the Wiki with a link for each one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hire

BONUS: Michael Mann directed a Mercedes ad around the same time starring Benicio Del Toro trading Malaysian Tin Ore Futures (sound familiar)?

Even with Techstream, is it possible...?

I have a 2016 Avalon Limited. I have figured out the techstream install and got the cable. I'm seeing some options, but i'm not seeing the option to enable "all windows DOWN with remote".

is this just NOT an option on the 2016's? I would like to be able to use my keyfob to roll down all my windows on a hot day (before i enter/start the car, obv). I think there's an option for putting the sunroof back - but it requires the physical key in the door.

Or am i using the wrong version of TIS? I just want to know if i'm wasting my time

thanks for any help

Tony Gilroy mini?

was re-listening to an old episode this week (I forget, it might've been Burn After Reading) and David goes on an extended riff about how the Bourne movies are Greengrass vs Gilroy, and how Bourne Legacy is good, actually, etc.

They also (obv) touch on Michael Clayton and it just seems like it would be easy to squeeze in a Gilroy mini - Clayton, Bourne 4, Duplicity, Behemoth!, and then Rogue One/Andor as Patreon bonus,

maybe throw in Dan Gilroy if you want to make it last 2 months (Nightcrawler, Velvet Buzzsaw, Roman Israel, and maybe throw Freejack in there as a patreon bonus)

Ford 8N (1948?) not starting

i have replaced the starter (old one had mssing teeth), and the solenoid. 12v system. I replaced some wiring that seemed corroded, but nothing seems to work. I've tried the old solenoid and new ones.

At one point, i used jumper cables to connect the battery to the solenoid, and the starter turned when i pushed the button. it no longer does that - i thought maybe i burned out the solenoid b/c at one point the battery cable was getting hot. Any chance i burned out the *starter*? i don't want to replace it again, ibut i'm pretty sure i've followed the wiring diagrams correctly...

the starter button is a replacement (not recent). the key is on, the tractor is in Neutral. not sure what i'm doing wrong

Tow Packages

Thinking about having U-Haul install a tow package on my 2016 Limited. Anyone have experience with towing using an Avalon? not planning on pulling a huge boat or whatever, just small trailers and the like.

I know most folks will say "change your Transmission fluid more often if you tow a lot" but i guess i'm looking more for like...does it affect the ride, noise, rusting, etc day-to-day (not towing, just having it installed)?

Rob Bowman miniseries when? X-Files, Reign Of Fire, AIrborne, Elektra and DONE!

u/doodler1977 — 2 months ago

I have a 2016 Limited. Standard rearview mirror/garage door opener, not the aftermarket one. I have 2 garage openers - one is an older one, and i was able to clone the remote by holding it close to the mirror while pushing both buttons.

The second is a rolling-code opener. So i go to the opener/motor, put it in program/receive mode, hop in the car and start pressing the button - short 1-2 sec intervals. no dice. I try jsut holding down the button, no go.

i hope i'm missing a step, b/c i really don't want to have an opener clipped to my visor forever
