AP CS A credit to skip GEN_ENG 150?

Hello all. I was wondering whether a 4-5 in AP CS A would allow me to skip the first course of the new engineering foundations sequence: GEN_ENG 150: programming for engineers.

The AP credit table states that credit for COMP_SCI 1CA is awarded, a term I am unfamiliar with. And, looking at the course description for 150, it seems that AP CS A covers essentially the whole course.

Thus, would AP CS A allow me to gain credit for this new course and/or move onto more advanced courses quicker?

Can you count one McCormick course towards two different requirements?

The new "innovation" elective requirement in the McCormick core has a class which can also count to my technical electives in my major. Can I use the course to satisfy both and thus have a free elective?

Is MENU math bad for GPA?

Hi all. I am an incoming McCormick freshman who's considering taking the MENU mathematics track.

I was wondering whether these courses are significantly harder than their regular counterparts and, if so, how much harder to achieve good grades.

I love the idea of exploring math at a deeper level, but I hope to double major and minor, which already puts pressure on my course plan:

Thank you all

Is double major and dual degree the same?

Hello all. I'm an incoming McCormick freshman who is planning to also pursue a major in Weinberg. I saw online the terms "double major" and "dual degree" and am unsure what's the difference. Could someone explain? Thanks

Math placement exam

Hello all. I am worried about the McCormick math placement examinations because - being from ecuador - I graduated school last year and haven't been studying much lately. I got a 7 in the Math AA higher level IB exam, though no specific credits for 220-1 and 220-2 are awarded (math 2xx, could someone explain what that is?)

Should I study for the test, or will I remember from my great performance in the hardest IB math?

Will I struggle?

I’m an incoming data science freshman whos considering a double major in Industrial Engineering because of my strong interest in optimization, systems, and data/CS-heavy work.

But i'm worried haven’t taken physics in HS. I’m interested in it, but basically unexperienced compared to others. Though I'm strong in math and CS.

Will I struggle badly in the science requirements + Engineering Analysis (EA) sequence? And what about DTC?

I’ve heard just heard EA is being replaced by “Engineering Foundations," does that make things easier/harder or just different?

I’m mainly trying to gauge if I’ll be behind immediately or if it’s manageable with strong math/CS skills.

Any honest advice from current students would help. Thank you all

I’ve been going back and forth on this for days and need outside perspective from people who actually know these schools.

BTW if anyone is a current student (or had to choose between them), can I DM you?

My Profile

• Planning to live on the East Coast long term.

  • Outgoing, social, make friends easily. Want a built-in friend group and an active, friendly environment. Not looking for a hyper-competitive, every-man-for-himself vibe.

  • Career goal: Fed Reserve, Econ ministry, Econ consulting, Macro Hedge Fund, PE, or MBB consulting. Open to other paths but that’s the main target.

  • I like the idea of exploring random classes (CS, music, applied math, philosophy) but won’t be doing it obsessively. Just want the option.

  • Frat culture is okay if it's not dominating the social scene. I want bars, restaurants, nightlife, shows.

  • Cost is equal at both schools, so money is off the table.

  • I’ve never experienced the traditional college campus life (big football games, tailgates, dorm culture) because I’m from a capital city so I'd like that. But also know I love city life.

  • Not a fan of harsh winters or overly stressful environments (in the non-academic sense, I am very self-ambitious but also don't want the academic stress to permeate into campus life).

  • I am very ethics and values driven.

What I’ve Researched So Far

Georgetown (McDonough):

  • Built-in recruiting infrastructure through MSB — career support is baked into the curriculum, but dependent on getting into a club

  • DC has mild weather, interesting internship opportunies (IMF, World Bank, Fed, policy world) even if that’s not my primary focus

  • job placement is solid — strong target, good Wall Street pipeline

  • No football culture to speak of (D3) but somewhat basketball

  • DC and Georgetown nightlife seems very nice, varied and active.

  • Georgetown neighborhood is beautiful

  • Jesuit values, cura personalis, ethics-driven culture, collaborative not cutthroat

Northwestern (Econ):

  • Big Ten football — real tailgates, rivalries, student section. The campus experience I’ve never had, but how active is it?

  • Chill, friendly Midwestern culture — consistently described as collaborative not competitive

  • Strong MBB consulting placement, solid IB placement

  • Quarter system — more intense than semesters. Not a fan.

  • Academic freedom to explore and perhaps double major

  • BUT: i heard Evanston nightlife is weak, especially without Greek Life. Chicago is 25 min away but it’s a train ride, not outside your door

  • Greek life has historically dominated the social scene though it’s declining (15-25% now). Non-Greek social life on weekends can be limited

  • Brutal Midwest winters — Lake Michigan wind chill is real

  • Quite a better music scene, Dillo day seems amazimg.

Which one sounds like a better fit?

Thanks in advance

I'm between Georgetown McDonough and Northwestern Economics.

Both have the same cost and I like both their environments and campus.

Solely from a NYC private equity, hedge fund and consulting perspective, which one should I attend? Thank you all.
