Brisbane to Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre trip leaving next week - worried about the forecast rain!

Hi all,

We have had a trip to Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre planned for quite some time now - The lake is full and the wildflowers are running riot. We are self-sufficient, high clearance 4x4 and have done outback trips before. We were planning to come through Broken Hill > Arkaroola > Marree > Kati Thanda, spending a few days in Arkaroola/Gammon ranges for some hikes and camping. I know theres been a lot of rain out in the Flinders ranges region just in the last week, and theres more forecast for the coming week.

If the weather is kind to us - how many days would you recommend in Arkaroola and surrounds?

Or are we realistically shit out of luck?

We could go along highways all the way to Marree and then Oodnadata track to Kati Thanda but then we miss out on fun scenic bits.

Thank you very much in advance for any advice you can give :)

Waiting

Vixen and Oscar are very expectant.

For walkies!

(Not pictured: extreme zoomies when I stood up because of expectation for aforementioned walkies)

Bulbophyllum mcphersonii just flowered!

You’d miss it if you weren’t paying attention!

A miniature from the rainforests of far north (Cooktown) to central (Rockhampton) Queensland, Australia.

That’s a normal sized pencil for scale.

Visiting Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre late August - things to see and do on way there/back from Brisbane

The lake is filling up and we want to see it! Will be driving from Brisbane in mid August.

We are well set up, self sufficient and have done multi-week outback trips a few times - including the Simpsons desert crossing a few years ago.

Looking for recommendations on the best route to take out there and places to visit during our trip - thinking to either take Cooper developmental road (visit Eromanga and some dinosaurs!) or Adventure way (Eulo hot springs and Currawinya National park) to get out there, open to suggestions for the way back.

Flinders ranges would be lovely but that is a trip in and of itself for another time.

We love nature, animal and plant spotting. Hikes and hot springs. A cold beer at a good outback pub!

We have a bit over 2.5 weeks (leave 19th August, return by 6th September) - Any recommendations and ideas are very much appreciated :)

Is this Cosmophasis micaroides or a different species? SEQLD

I chased this splendid fellow around a potted fig for 15 minutes this morning and these were the best photos I got 🤣

The colours look a bit pinker/orangey than the typical blue micaroides that I see around my garden.

Brisbane - QLD.
