New here!

Hi everyone!
It’s honestly so nice to find a community of people who are dealing with the same thing as me.

I’m a 25-year-old woman from Switzerland, and I also have pectus excavatum. For most of my life, it never really bothered me that much. As a child, I was never bullied because of it. My friends actually thought I was a cool “different” kid rather than the girl with a hole in her chest. 😄

Of course, I had my insecurities about it during puberty, but I never really felt ashamed of it. I even felt comfortable wearing low-cut tops — kind of an “embrace your insecurities” attitude.

Doctors in Switzerland have always been quite hesitant when it comes to surgical correction, especially since my pectus never seemed to cause any major problems.
However, over the past year, I’ve been experiencing increasing breathing difficulties. I also have asthma, which was poorly controlled for quite a long time, and I’m now being treated by a new pulmonologist. I can’t help wondering whether the worsening of my breathing could also be related to my pectus.
Every now and then, I feel some pressure in my chest, and I’ve never really had much endurance either.
I’m now considering really pushing for further investigation and, if appropriate, surgery especially because I would need the procedure to be covered by health insurance. Otherwise, it would be prohibitively expensive here.
I’m also an ICU nurse, so I actually did an ECG on myself. 😂 It didn’t show anything obviously abnormal, but there are a few leads that made me wonder about possible right-sided heart strain. Obviously, ECG interpretation in someone with pectus can be different from a normal chest anatomy, so I’m currently questioning whether I’m overthinking my symptoms or whether there could actually be something going on.
For those of you who are adults with pectus: How was your experience as an adult? Did you have breathing problems, chest pressure, reduced exercise tolerance, etc.? And if you had surgery, did you notice a significant improvement afterwards?
I’m also still a total chicken when it comes to anesthesia, despite literally working in the field. 😂
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! I’ve added some photos of my chest as well.

Back with the wedding photos you asked for!

Hi everyone,

At the end of March, I shared a post about my wedding dress. A few people in the comments asked if I could come back and share some photos from the wedding day, so here they are!
It was an absolutely beautiful day. I felt so beautiful and confident, and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me back then and helped ease some of my insecurities. Your kind words meant a lot to me, and I truly appreciate all the support.

And now, as promised, here are some photos from our special day. ❤️

Wedding Cake

Hi everyone,
We’re getting married on a weekday next week, so our schedule is a bit tighter than a typical weekend wedding since many of our guests have to work the next day. The wedding will probably end around 10 PM.
We’re currently wondering when we should cut and serve the wedding cake. We spent quite a lot on it, so it would be a shame if nobody really eats it 😅 Personally, after a multi-course dinner, I usually don’t have room left for cake anymore.
Our ceremony starts around 3:30 PM, the cocktail hour starts at 5 PM, and dinner begins at 6:30 PM. We were thinking about cutting and serving the cake already during the cocktail hour instead of later in the evening.
Has anyone done this before? Did it work well? Any tips or experiences?

Thank you!

I need help putting this into words and I’m also looking for advice and support.

Yesterday was supposed to be my bachelorette party, which my closest friends had lovingly organized as a surprise for me. At the same time, my dog had been very sick for several days. He was suffering from heart failure and had fluid in his lungs, and I could see that he was getting worse by the hour.

When it was time for me to leave for the party, I noticed that his condition was deteriorating rapidly. My fiancé stayed with him, which gave me some reassurance. I tried to go to the event, and we started with something simple like pottery painting.

Not long after, I received a call from him saying he needed to urgently find an emergency vet because my dog was struggling to breathe. About half an hour later, he called me again via FaceTime from the vet clinic.

He and the veterinarian tried to explain to me that my dog needed to be euthanized. His condition had worsened severely. He had started vomiting blood and fluid, and his lungs were severely filled. The vet said there was nothing more they could do. My dog was already unconscious on the table.

I had to watch, via FaceTime, as he passed away. I couldn’t be there physically, and that breaks my heart in a way I can’t really describe.

The day feels very surreal to me because I was trying to process the loss of my dog while also being at what was supposed to be a joyful celebration of my upcoming wedding. I know I wouldn’t have made it to the vet in time anyway, and staying at the party meant he didn’t have to suffer any longer than necessary.

I’m just struggling to process everything that happened and how to feel about that day.

If anyone has gone through something similar or has advice on how to cope with this kind of loss and emotional overwhelm, I would really appreciate it.
