Is there any saving this 138 year old book?

Hi all!

My grandma recently went through her dad’s belongings and found this school book from 1888. It wasn’t his or anyone in our family’s, he was just a lover of old books like me!

Problem is, this thing has mold… and not the brown spots people ask about assuming it’s mold, full on three dimensional mold is growing on the cover and first few pages.

I spent some time digging and most of the posts I’m finding are people being told their book just has foxing and that everything is fine but that’s pretty clearly not the case here. The text block appears to be mostly fine, there’s a hole eating through a few of the pages in the back but it really doesn’t seem like the mold is that far into the book.

So really, is there any saving this 138 year old book? My heart is going to break if it’s garbage but obviously I’m not risking the rest of my collection.

I tried posting in r/bookcollecting but the auto mod took my post down immediately and told me to refer to their guide but the link is down :(

Anybody in here an Alice in Wonderland collector?

I have an old picture book published in 1955 that I recently replaced because the damaged spine bothered me seeing it stood next to the other books in my collection. I’d love to give it away to someone who’d love it as much as I have over the last 10+ years! It’s not necessarily worth anything other than another addition to your collection :)

Cleaning scuff off leatherbound book spine?

Does anybody have recommendations on what I could use to get these scuffs off of the spine? I’m not sure what it is, it was there when I bought it. I haven’t tried anything because I’m afraid to ruin it!

Ren faire outfit!

Kicking myself so hard rn bc I’m just now learning two weeks later I got zero photos of just me in my outfit so enjoy this screenshot of a video I took before we left lmao

I made the skirt & cloak (I made the same skirt in green too but my sister wore green so that helped me make my decision) + altered the neckline/hemmed/removed one of the lining layers on my underdress

A random passerby was even jealous of my cloak, it was the highlight of my day

Not super complicated garments but I’m super proud of myself- these are the first garments I made since I was about 11 when I made a tank top for my mom, a beanie for my dad, and a shirt for me with one long sleeve and one short sleeve that my peers were not very kind about

One day I’ll tackle corset making, I s2g

Skirt and cloak are cotton… I honestly don’t know if it was woven or knitted and I don’t know how to tell, I can tell you it was whatever Michael’s had available lmao

I followed this tutorial for the skirts for the most part, but went a lil off script

I kinda sorta followed this tutorial for the cloak (but not really tbh, it was more inspiration

Cat pee in sewing machine

Suspect in question is Henry (known aliases Hank, Hankie, Honk, Honkie, Henri), previously imprisoned (as shown in photo) for unrelated crimes.

I have a Singer Tradition machine and I was able to clean the outside no problem with an enzyme cleaner. Unfortunately, when using the machine the moving parts still kick up cat pee smells.

I’m nervous about spraying the enzyme cleaner on the motorized parts, I really don’t want to ruin my machine but I also don’t want to have to go out and buy a whole new one.

Any advice? According to my partner’s google search I’m apparently the first Redditor to have this problem which is like, never the case 🙃

Small update: I got brave and took apart at least some of the machine. Definitely had some pee around the bobbin casing and feed dogs that has now been dealt with via enzyme cleaner, I’m hoping that’s the last of where the smell was coming from but I keep saying that. Gravity though, right? Hopefully there’s no pee in the mechanics that move the needle.

Final update: we did it folks! I put on my big girl pants and took the thing apart, cleaned every centimeter with the enzyme cleaner, a brush and q-tips and voila- no pee smell! I’m going to come back to it tomorrow and give it a final sniff down, if I smell anything else I’ll use alcohol and if that doesn’t do the trick I’ll take it into a professional. There really wasn’t a whole lot of pee inside thank goodness. For anyone in the future who may find themselves in the same unfortunate circumstance: you can do it! Take a deep breath, put the criminal in another room to get some goddamn peace, and do the dang thing.

What does a newbie need to know to color hair with henna?

First photo is my current virgin hair, second photo is a bonus of a red I did years ago (with my perfect baby boy Ron). I don’t expect the same red by any means, I’ve dyed my hair at home all sorts of colors but I’m allergic to those kinds of products now and I’m so bored with my natural color.

In my opinion one of the beauties of at-home dye jobs is that you can’t really predict what it’s going to look like in the end and from what I’ve seen on this sub it sounds like henna on hair varies quite a bit.

Can anyone recommend a good starter guide to using henna for hair? Or any tips and tricks you wish you knew before you used it for the first time?

I’d also love recommendations on cost-effective places to buy henna for hair, I’m in the US for reference!

TIA :)

Need some guidance on starting to use henna for hair!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve seen all sorts of brands/suppliers for hair henna and I was hoping to get some solid recommendations for my hair. I’m located in the U.S.

First photo is my current (virgin) hair, second is the vibe I’m hoping to get to (plus my cutie baby boy Ron). I’ve had red hair for a lot of my life and unfortunately I am now allergic to most hair dyes and hair dye related products so I’m wanting to pivot bc I feel so boring with my natural hair. I don’t expect the henna to turn out exactly like the other dye of course, but any recommendations to get even kinda close? Or just general info I should know before committing? I’d be fine if it just turns out orange too I just want to make sure I have all the information I need!
