Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 English Translation Patch v0.9.5 Released!

Hi everyone,

The first public release of my Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 English translation patch is now available!

Alpha 3 is one of my three favorite SRW games, and I’ve wanted to experience its full story in English for years. After putting a great deal of time, care, and attention to detail into this project, it feels great to finally share it with other fans.

Download and release details

All patches should be applied on the raw ISO.

What’s translated in this release?

  • UI: 100%
  • Pilot, unit, weapon, part, skill, and Seishin names: 100%
  • Story: 100%
  • Terminology and encyclopedia: 100%
  • Battle quotes: 100%
  • Basically, everything our testers were able to find has been translated and refined.

A note about the translation

As mentioned in my original announcement, this is an AI-assisted translation, primarily using GPT-5.6 Sol through a translation pipeline built specifically for Alpha 3. An additional refinement pass using GPT-6 Astra has also been completed.

Scenarios are translated with their full dialogue context, supported by glossaries and detailed speaker profiles covering more than 700 characters. Multiple passes are used to improve wording, consistency, terminology, and character voice.

The game’s text has also been relocated where necessary, removing the byte constraints and allowing for a full and natural translation.

If you’ve been skeptical of MTL patches in the past, I invite you to give this one a try and judge it by the results. Our testers have given very positive feedback on the translation quality.

Due to popular requests, Gong version Alpha 3 has been replaced with a vocal version. And another secret track replaced.

Feedback and help are welcome

There may, of course, still be errors, awkward lines, or bugs that we haven’t caught yet. I plan to continue supporting and improving the patch after release.

If you’d like to help with testing, proofreading, checking against the Japanese script, or simply talk about SRW, feel free to join us on Discord.

Thanks to everyone who has followed the project, tested the patch, reported issues, or offered encouragement along the way.

I hope this patch gives more fans the chance to experience Alpha 3’s full story in English, and I’m looking forward to continuing to improve it together with the community.

Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 — English Translation Project

Hi everyone,

I’m working on an English translation patch for Super Robot Wars Alpha 3.

Alpha 3 is one of my three favorite SRW games, and personally, I think it has the best story in the series. Like many SRW fans, I have only barely understood the story through scattered information from many websites such as the Gate of Magus (RIP), Super Robot Wars Wiki, Akurasu.

From what I've been able to piece together over the years, the Balmar seems like a well written antagonist faction. They have their background, internal and external struggle, they have likeable and hated characters, and they have cool mechs. I've wanted to experience the full story properly in English for a long time, so I finally started working on it myself.

Current progress

- UI: 99.5% translated (there might be some obscure menu no one ever sees missing)

- Pilot/Unit/Weapon/Parts/Skills/Seishin: 100% translated

- Terminology: 10% (getting started on)

- Encyclopedia: 10%

- Story: 28/125 stages (including the first four-way splits at the beginning)

- Battle lines: 0% (This is lowest priority and will be done after story is completed)

Translation

Translation is primarily handled by GPT5.6 Sol, with a translation pipeline optimized for Alpha 3. I know AI translation is a divisive topic so here is my thought.

Are many of the AI translations slops? Yes. But an AI Translation doesn't have to be slop, not if it's done correctly.

So, what makes this translation not so slop?

As like many others, I have suffered first-hand a lot of sloppy MTL games, so I care a lot about translation quality, especially when it comes to one of my favorite games.

This patch is not line-by-line once and done translation type. The following measures have been used to hopefully improve AI translation, by order of importance:

- Dialogues are supplied to the model one scenario at a time so the model has a complete scene context. One scenario includes pre-/post-dialogue and in-stage dialogue, which is usually in the range of 200-400 lines.

- The model has to check its translation against a library of glossaries/terms.

- Speaker metadata (name, gender, personality, background, speaking style, series) will be supplied for the line translation. Example metadata could be: Touma - male, hot-blooded, straightforward, earnest, direct casual English, part-timer, Banpresto Originals.

- About 700+ characters have been individually researched online, profiled and added to the translation pipeline.

- Two passes translation. The first pass is natural context-aware translation. The second pass is specifically for clean-up and security (Alpha 3 has a typical brutal byte budget of older games).

- I have proof-read menus, pilot names, unit names, part names, skills/abilities' affect and the first 12 scenarios.

- I have manually adjusted unique font and render coordinate for all UI elements, ensuring a best possible presentation.

With that said, I am aware that there will still be tons of improvement needed for that translation. This will be a long on-going process as I will continually improve the patch. I’m looking for people who would be interested in helping with:

- Testing the patch in PCSX2 or on compatible hardware.

- Finding crashes, text overflow, incorrect speakers, formatting problems, etc.

- Improving grammar, flow, characterization, and terminology consistency, where applied.

- Comparing English dialogue against the Japanese script, if you are capable and interested.

Release plans

Since I use GPT 5.6-Sol High with multiple passes, the tokens consumption is quite big. The progress is gated by my token limit. At the moment, translation speed is roughly 30–35 scenarios per week.

At that pace, I expect the initial story translation to be complete in roughly another three weeks.

I plan to release the first patch sometime next week to testers.

If you're interested in the project, testing it, helping improve the translation, or simply hanging out with other SRW fans, please join the Discord: https://discord.gg/XcFcQ7DpPS

I also intend to translate many untranslated SRW games after Alpha 3. My next candidate is Masou Kishin II: Revelation of Evil God.

I cancelled my SuperGrok subscription.

The censorship is getting worse by the day. Soon, it will be just as restricted as ChatGPT and but without ChatGPT's productivity prowess. Translation is weak and naive. Complex tasks like working with and editing data in various file formats are often failures.

The new Imagine model is incredibly bad and a huge regression compared to the old Imagine. Somehow the characters look more unrealistic and plasticky, like dolls. It feels like 2024 level of quality. It also doesn't understand how light works with water. If a character stands in a knee deep water, chances are their feet will be plugged right into their knees and they look like deformed dwarves.

And at least 10% of the images will result in some kind of anatomical monstrosity.

The weekly usage limit is evidently reduced yet again. Monthly subscription is more expensive than OpenAI with less usage. It is hopeless at this point.
At this level of censorship, why bother with Grok at all? I have again switched back to openAI.
