If you could give one word to a cancer fighter, what would it be?

So I bought some beads and upcycled some more- and I have been finding my peace in making bracelets a-la “Little Words Project”. The goal is to have short phrases (“you got this”) or single words as inspiration on them. I have one that says “Breathe” from the actual LWP that has gotten me through so many cancer panic moments.

I am NOT looking to make money on these; in fact I plan to give them away somehow (maybe my local cancer center?) so those who have them can see them and be inspired. My personal favorite is “Forward” because sometimes this journey is literally moment by moment.

I have 14 pink ribbon beads. Any thoughts on words that would be good to use? Should I not do this? To be clear, I have been through the trenches here.

So far, I have:
-FIGHTER
-STRENGTH
-FORWARD
-SURVIVOR
-BADASS
-EXHALE

Thanks for allowing me to bounce ideas here. ❤️

Found these cabinets at ReStore- and they are now my fabric’s home!

I previously had all my fabric in bins and on the floor, but found these as a definite upgrade. They weren’t necessarily a steal but I’m so happy to no longer have to dig through bins to find what I want anymore! I know they aren’t necessarily everyone’s taste but I love them and they’re actually hardwood. Just wanted to share with some like-minded people. 🥰

July Empties

Here’s July! That Blueberry Crumble hand soap was a thrift find and SO GOOD! Hello Beautiful wasn’t all I remembered it to be so eh, farewell. ✌️ Everything else- pretty standard.

For those of you that wanted to see more of the gradient

I got through a few more stars, and some of the dragon piecing today! The sunset feel is turning out just the way I wanted.

I found a beautiful batik (see the random blue star) that would be perfect for a Northern Lights feel above the sunset… still considering that. This quilt is going to be considerably extended from what is seen here, with stars and a border.

Piecing the large portions of the dragon background is very time-consuming. I am piecing each star individually before moving on to the next.

Gradient Star

There will be many more of these but they look SO COOL! I have a vision in mind and it is coming out exactly as I pictured it. ❤️

Another Finished Quilt

This one is made to be a little lighter- it is not a sandwich but is quilted directly to the plush backing. The backing is a blanket from Walmart and the outline of the unicorns glow in the dark! The binding is a purple gingham I got from Joann’s many years ago but never found a use for.

I love this one so much. It’s going to be so hard to give it up to Project Linus but we do not need more blankets in this house 🙃

Pattern is Dream House Quilt by SewCanShe.

Another Finish!

These have been sitting around just waiting for me to be in the right mindset to put the binding on. Apparently today was the day! 🙃 I tried hand binding on my last quilt and will likely never do it again. I did a machine binding on both sides of this and it was an absolute dream.

This pattern (Iris Quilt by Erica Jackman/Kitchen Table Quilting) was… okay. I would have liked a little more guidance with it as far as how the piecing eventually went together but maybe that was my fault for not reading the whole pattern before starting. It’s also very wasteful on trim as it’s assembled on grainline and trimmed on bias. It’s a very scrappy end result but that was the point and I like it a lot. It will go off to Project Linus.

It’s DONE.

Y’all, this was my first major commitment. WIP was posted a while back but the top was finished by me, and the 96” square quilt was quilted by the lovely u/kteacakes. She did full custom quilting and left it quilted lightly enough that it will be wonderful for my bed in winter. The binding was sewn on the front by her and hand finished on the back by me.

Yes, I left the blue tree at the corner.

It will be put away and entered in my county fair! 🎡

Y’all… don’t sleep on these. They are so good!

$4.22 by me! I went back and got two more bags.

Made my daughter a lunch box!

The zipper broke on hers and I hate zippers. So, what did I do? Made an entirely new lunch box, complete with 24” zipper 🤣 Simple quilting but it works. I made it completely washable- I just am so sick of the plasticky ones from the store. I wanted it to be washable and absorbent, so it’s 4 quilted layers (cotton, fleece, old towel terry, cotton) plus a cotton lining. My machine was complaining about the bulk and there’s plenty I would do differently next time- but I’m overall pleased with how it turned out!

My daughter chose all the fabrics 🙂

The “accidental” quilt is done!!!

Definitely not perfect but lots learned. For something that was born out of scrap and hated fabric, I love this so much (maybe better than the quilt the scrap came from!

It’s also my first attempt at FMQ. I wanted to somewhat emulate the waves on Crayola crayons. I hope you enjoy!

The accidental quilt top is finished!

My childhood called and it wants this quilt back 🤣

It doesn’t lay completely flat but it is what it is. Lots of sewing on the bias.

I did, however, learn that masking tape along the seam lines helps keep things a lot more stable!

Considering I didn’t have a pattern for this and never planned for it to even happen, I absolutely love it!

Ironing Board PSA

My journey to obtain a metal-top ironing board (not plastic, which is what I have) brought me to a thrift store today, after advice from all you wonderful folks. I managed to find a beautiful vintage one for $5- heavy duty, and it even has wheels to help the “fragile housewife” get it out 🙃

When I brought it home and took off the (many) layers to clean them and get it ship-shape, I got down to what looked like the original cover, cigarette burns and all. I took it off and found a fibrous substance at the bottom. It never even occurred to me that there could be asbestos on it until after I did this.

From what I can tell it was likely fiberglass, but I did some research and many ironing board covers DID contain asbestos prior to 1980.

If you do get a thrifted ironing board, good for you! I love me a good round of “they don’t make things like they used to” but be aware of this little bit of information.

The ironing board! I saved my cover from the plastic board and it’s being washed currently.

Tl;dr: Ironing board covers of yore (pre-1980) can contain asbestos so use caution!

I thought y’all were my friends 😅

I’m back at it to make this a top. It’s a sew-as-you-go hack job 🙃

I can’t decide if I want to go horizontal or diagonal. Still processing that…

u/dustergrl — 5 months ago

Here’s the back

Pieced it together with remnants from the project and a couple other FQs that I didn’t really like for anything else. I feel like it could be its own quilt!

Honestly though, I’m extremely pleased with how flat it’s laying.

The top is trimmed and ready, now working on the back.

This is the Iris quilt (lap size) by Kitchen Table Quilting. It is oriented diagonally from the assembly, so there was a LOT of waste trimmed off. I took the trimmed pieces and am working on using them on the back, which will be a hodgepodge of leftovers from the project. I wasn’t a fan of the trim waste so probably won’t be making it again.

The back makes me feel like I have stepped back to 1990 😂

I plan on sending it to Project Linus 🙂

I’m behind on posting my empties. I think this is all of them!

All shopping my stash. I was not a fan of the Chamomile Patchouli (that’s the purple one not cut open that all the print wore off). Also didn’t like PCB as much as I remembered liking it (and I have another bottle still. 😬) Honestly, I’m fickle and ready to move on by the time a bottle is empty and I have plenty to keep me busy for the remainder of my life. Very little will get me out of my no-buy; I have a lot that smells similar to anything out there. But Art Stuff would do it, just saying. 🤷‍♀️

Lots of sanis; I use them at work! Have been too busy for candles lately so none of those.

And yall… stop buying bottles to put your FFM in! Use the small spritz sanitizer bottles to decant!!! ❤️
