NBD - Marin Alcatraz

Some of you here might remember me from many posts over the last 9 months as i battled with my kids mongoose fireball. We finally got it dialled but then we spotted this Marin frame only and with his birthday coming up we went for it. He’s been working hard this last year and it’s his dream bike so 🤷‍♂️

Brand new 2024 frame (black white red)
Manitou circus
Deore cranks
His old wheels :-)
His old tyres (SB8s)
His old bars
DMR defy low stack stem
A diy shim in the seat post because it was too skinny. Proper shim on its way.

Bmx /DJ - who is doing both?

Been learning to jump DJ over the last year or so with my kids. We picked up a really good bmx (Fit Inman 2013) a long time ago and my kid is enjoying it too so i picked up a very used United so we could do it together. Really enjoying using both DJ and BMX.

Who here is doing both and what makes you lean towards one or the other at different times? I feel bmx feels more direct? And i enjoy not babying the bike like i do either my DJ. But bmx feels so twitchy on jumps.

Keen to hear how others get on with both i suppose!

Headset hell

Long story short i think i have bought a lemon (although it was dirt cheap)

United frame. Salt fork. I assume OEM?

Anyway. The headset is a real mess. It used balls in a cage - can i just switch to a normal integrated headset?

I’ll also need the top cap. It’s the Salt one which screws into threads in the steerer. There are options for m24 and m25 - which is most likely?

Help please!

Cranks are a mess too but I’ll come to that later.

Identify frame please!

Keen to pick this bmx up. Says it’s Salt but i don’t know if they made frames. Anyone recognise the logo?

How it started / how it’s going

Been on a journey with this bike. It’s a mongoose fireball. Came as a 9 speed. Was hoping it would be great as a DJ and would also work as a normal trail bike in the forest. Quickly single speeded it’s my kid wanted to focus only on jumps.

Cable disc brake sucked so switched to an mt200.

Manitou fork replaced the RST Dirt which worked ok but doesn’t really give any joy 😐

Bottom bracket needed replacing. Headset bearings sucked. Wheel quickly went really out of true. All sorted.

Basically it’s a good frame with bad-to-ok components and probably cost the same as a decent used DJ once we did all the stuff to make it solid but you live and learn. Frame is good though!

It’s an absolute machine now.

Where to get Manitou Circus axle bolt?

It’s for an older manitou circus pro. It came without this bolt. Anyone know where i can get one?

To get tension in the meantime i used a bolt-on QR skewer and a top cap and it seems to be ok?!!! Is that super unsafe?!

Harwell pump track

Wren (6) me (43) and Ru (12) on the new pump track in Harwell, Oxfordshire. Great spot, four good tables with a steeper and a mellower lip, with a little flow trail as well. Ru got his first x up.

More of a jump track than a pump track. Good vibes and nice locals.

Made by Ox Trails and volunteers too, massive kudos to them because free facilities like this build communities. ❤️

Low stack stems

Bought a manitou circus. Didn’t get the steerer measurement. Too short.

Too short right?

What are my options? Is it the DMR one?

Edit: got the DMR Defy stem. Will update when it comes to say if it solved the issue. Won’t be riding it like this btw. Thank you all for your help.

Headset bearing nightmare

I have an FSA no.8 headset on my dirt jump bike. One ball is gone. I can’t find any direct replacements.

Can i drop in a sealed cartridge? If so, which one?

Also is it safe to ride missing one ball?

New frame 👍 Saracen cr2

Been working with an old Charge Blender frame which i really liked but always felt a bit different to a real actual DJ. Picked this frame up for 100 quid and moved all my parts across. New chain and chainring. Currently battling with the QR rear wheel in the drop outs so could be new wheel time.

Saracen CR2
Pike u-turns mostly locked out
United 30t chainring
Whatever other bits i found cheap 😊

Saracen CR2 chainring

Looking to buy this Saracen cr2 but it comes with 25t chainring. I like a heavier gear so looking to do 32/12 or minimum 30/12.

Do you think there is space to get 32t on this? Or 30t as a backup? Haven’t bought it yet and i can’t ask the guy to measure.

Low end theory

Posted both of these at some point but this is our father-son semi-budget combo.

Mine:
Charge blender
Argyles

His:
Mongoose fireball
Pike 426 u-turn

Total value probably less than a proper set of pike DJ 😆

My 12 year old yesterday. Someone from here (thanks Chris!) let him try some forks and he liked them. Hes not done the step up jump before so that became the focus for the day really.

I didn’t do a lot of riding everything there is massive haha!

Wanted to share my 6yo kids DJ. It’s a Commencal Ramones mtb but we stripped the gears off, single speeded it and now it’s flying. The suntour fork actually works really well, preload makes it go from soft and pliable to stiff and jumpy really easy. Not super light but my kid is sending it.
