The stock is dropping like a rock.

I am usually on r/IndianStockMarket But after Modi's announcement, fear has gripped the sub. Everyone is expecting a huge drop in the stock market.

The HDFC Bank of 10 years ago does not exist anymore. When it merged with HDFC Ltd., it swallowed a massive, slow-moving mortgage book. Its Return on Equity (ROE) compressed. Its Credit-Deposit (CD) ratio became completely bloated, forcing it to aggressively hunt for expensive deposits just to stay afloat.

A 25x multiple was the premium the market paid for a nimble, perfectly engineered retail growth engine.

A 16x multiple is the exact, correct price for a post-merger behemoth that is now so large it is mathematically constrained by the physical limits of the Indian banking system.

It is not going back to 25x. The market didn't "misprice" it; the market permanently re-rated it to reflect its new, heavier, slower mass.
