Weird grooming reaction?

Hello!

I’m still introducing my 3 year old female and 3 month old female cats to each other.

Today, the kitten came over to the resident cat while she was napping next to me.

RC cat was the grooming the new cat, and then proceeded to bite her, followed by a hiss and growl.

I’ve had the new cat for a month now. We’ve done site and scent swapping (no reaction) and supervised face to face sessions.

She’s never groomed her before today.

What are the sounds my resident cat is making?

Still in the process of introducing my resident cat and my kitten.

Every time the kitten and resident cat meet face-to-face, and the kitten bounces on my cat, my resident cat makes these sounds just curious what she’s trying to say.

Resident cat is 3 Y Female. Spayed.

New kitten is almost 12 weeks female. Unspayed.

Have had new kitten for 5 weeks. We did do site and scent swapping - gated play, food on opposite side of the door.

This is not the first face to face encounter.

Resident cat is fine if kitten is engaged and not in her face, then can coexist in the same room.

They’ve done nose touches a few times.

Is my resident cat just trying to set boundaries or is she really upset?

Hello!

Resident cat is 3 female. Spayed.

New kitten is 11 weeks female. Not spayed.

Already did scent swapping, site swapping, eating on opppsite sides.

Gated play.

Short supervised play sessions without a barrier.

Used Feliway plugins and sprays.

Issue: Even after playing for kitten for an hour to the point she is falling asleep, when we try to do a supervised play session for the past few days, she will fixate on resident cat and get in her face.

Throwing a toy/snack/barrier will work temporarily until she sees resident cat again.

She will chase resident cat, despite resident cat doing clawless swats/meowing and hissing at her. She doesn’t back off. She keeps pursuing until we take kitten and put her away. If we let her out she will do it again.

I know the kitten is just wanting to play/testing boundaries, but even when resident cat gives her the back off signal she doesn’t stop.

Resident cat totally chills in the room if kitten is playing with us or just not getting in her face.

Any tips?
