Update! You all told me not to buy the blue dress, and I actually love it!

A few weeks back, I posted on here that I had purchased the burgundy dress on the left for my brother-in-law’s black tie optional wedding, and I just didn’t love the way that it looked or that I felt in it. A little context about the wedding, it is in late September in the Colorado mountains and the ceremony starts at 4 o’clock. The invitation says “formal/black tie optional”, but also mentions cocktail dresses. My husband is also the best man and will be in a three-piece black suit.

I said I was going to buy the dress on the right (originally an olive green when I posted it, but they did not have that color in my size) and so many of you told me that the burgundy dress was better, and a few even saying the velvet one would “show every curve and bump” and “wouldn’t look good on a real woman”. My confidence definitely took a hit after those comments lol.

There were also a lot of genuinely helpful comments, though, saying that I should just get the burgundy dress altered as it was a tad bit too tight, but I decided that I didn’t want to invest more in a dress that I just didn’t love.

Well, I’m happy to report that I have received the velvet dress absolutely love it! Once I put it on, I realized that the burgundy dress felt too “prom” when I had it on and this one feels much more sophisticated and me.

Now, I would love some advice on accessorizing! I’m thinking black shoes? No necklace? How should I do my hair? The neck line makes this a little more complicated I think?

Edit: spelling and grammar

Husband used to read constantly, now says everything feels “already been done”… need hard sci-fi with actual literary merit

My husband (37) used to be a huge reader but burned out a few years back, said he’d read so much that nothing felt unique anymore. He’s recently mentioned wanting to get back into it though, specifically sci-fi and I want to surprise him with a new book or series to get into.

A few things that might help. I know that loves Dune and Pillars of the Earth, so big sweeping stories with a lot going on are his thing. He’s also into physics and space stuff as a hobby, so he notices when the science in a book is just made up or there for vibes, and it takes him out of the story. He read The Martian and Project Hail Mary already and liked both, but said the writing itself didn’t really stick with him. He’s also into D&D and warhammer if that helps paint the picture. I thought about suggesting Red Rising but I have a feeling the science in it would bug him more than anything else.

Mostly, I just want something where the science doesn’t pull him out of the story but the writing has some actual substance too. Not looking for beach read stuff, but also nothing so up its own butt about being literary that it forgets to tell a good story. Fantasy recs welcome too, feels like a similar lane for him.

TIA!

Edit: WOW! I can’t thank you all individually, so I’ll say it here: thank you all SO much for the recs! It’s truly appreciated. I talked to him about the responses, and he has read a lot of the most recommended series (The Expanse, Revelation Space, The Mars Trilogy are all apparently his favorite of all time and he read them before we met) but he now has so many other options to look into. You guys rock :)

▲ 10 r/Tree

Can she survive this?

We had a crazy microburst storm come through and damaged our 22 year old maple. We hauled away only what was broken for safety reasons, and have not cut anything else. Pictured are the tree right after it happened, after we removed the broken parts, and the most recent photo that I could find of the tree as a whole.

We are going to call someone to come look at it in the morning. In the meantime, give it to me straight…how bad is it?

Help! Round 2

You all gave such great help with what to get for my brother-in-law’s upcoming wedding in September in Colorado, I had to come back for more advice!

I purchased this dress and while I think it’s beautiful, I’m not in love with it. I don’t think it’s super flattering on me, I have to keep pulling the bodice down for it to lay right (you can see the bunching under the bust in this photo), and the color is lighter than I thought it was going to be.

The second two dresses, I have just ordered as backups, but I’m a little concerned that they’re not formal enough. My husband is in the wedding and will be wearing a black tux. What are everyone’s thoughts?

Additionally, the colors for the wedding are blush and sage, are the two backup dresses that I ordered too close to Sage? The website says they are olive, but I’m a bit concerned.

ETA: The bridesmaids will be in blush chiffon gowns, so there's no chance of me being in the same one!

Fiddler’s Green Seat Upgrades!

Just wanted to give everyone with GA lawn seats for tonight a heads up that on the AXS app there are some pretty decent deals to upgrade your seats. I got seats in the 204 section for $80 upgraded, which is much cheaper than they were going for before.

The pricing is dynamic, so things might have changed in the hour since I bought them, but I thought I’d let people know!

This s’mores loaf is a delicious mess

This loaf is definitely not my prettiest, but it’s SO GOOD. Ooey gooey marshmallow and chocolate bits with graham crackers throughout. The inclusions definitely weighed it down, and I think that’s what caused the tunneling, but I’ll take it! I’ll definitely be making this again!

100 grams starter
500 grams unbleached AP flour
350 grams water
10 grams salt
Heaping handfuls of crushed graham crackers, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips

Mix together starter, water, and salt until combined. Add in flour. Let rest for one hour. Stretch and folds every 30 minutes for a total of 5. Bulk rise on 89 degrees F proofing mat for 6 hours. Put dough on counter and put in inclusions while shaping. Transfer to banneton and cold proof over night. Oven to 450 degrees F, score and bake for 45 minutes with lid on. Take lid off and watch CLOSELY for 15 more minutes.
