Hand pain when pushing a wheelchair

My partner just got a manual wheelchair as a backup/for occasional use when they're powerchair isn't suitable. We tried it out and in the space of about 10 minutes I had to stop multiple times because the palm of my left hand hurt so much. It still hurts now. I'm struggling find any advice on this problem as everything I search comes up with advice for people self propelling in wheelchairs. I've also pushed other manual wheelchairs on a few occasions and not had this problem. I would really appreciate any advice on why this happened/how to prevent it. Thanks in advance!

Guess who is sponsoring Manchester Pride? HBO Max. Credit to u/purplejasmine for the meme

Yes, HBO Max behind the new HP series. The sponsorship was announced on Instagram (tagging Manchester Pride) but has not been announced on the Manchester Pride website
