GalaxyCon?

Huge shot in the dark but is anyone gonna be at GalaxyCon this weekend? I haven’t really done anything fandom related in like 14 years lol but I was wondering if any HS people are still doing the con circuit

galaxycon - shot in the dark

This is suuuuch a shot in the dark but are any Homestuck fans gonna be at GalaxyCon this weekend? I haven’t been to a convention in 14 years so this would be a total impulse thing—I’m thinking about throwing on a closetplay costume of a troll or something. I haven’t kept up with anything fandom related since 2012 haha

The ethics of early fatality reports - discussion

I want to preface this by saying I’m not ragging on anyone, and I know people are tired of rehashing streamer drama, so this isn’t that.

I’m just genuinely curious about people’s opinion on how early reports of deaths should be handled in a realtime, high drama setting like a weather livestream.

With Lena, Enid, and now the storms on 5/6, weather streamers got misinformation—through no fault of their own, I know misinfo was widely circulating—and immediately announced that there were fatalities. Miraculously, they were wrong all three times (I honestly thought Lena would have made them really cautious about doing that in the future but anyway).

Again, I don’t think it’s their fault that they got bad info. However, I really question the utility of immediately announcing unconfirmed reports of fatalities.

I know Lena was an especially weird case, as pretty much everywhere was briefly reporting four people were killed, but overall it seems like sometimes streamers really jump the gun. They aren’t the only ones, but they inadvertently massively amplify misinfo, as I see people using them as a source when discussing the toll of a storm in the immediate aftermath.

And I guess my question is just, why? Why not wait and not comment until you have better information the next day? I feel like it tends to just panic people. If I’m watching the stream for news on say, Enid, where I do know people, and I hear there’s fatalities—if it’s true, I can’t yet do anything about it, if it’s false, I’m freaking out for no reason. I just wonder if there’s a really good reason to do so outside of just trying to be the guy that has the most Breaking News Of All Time for the sake of it.

Anyway sorry for the ramble lol just curious if anyone else has thoughts about this. My opinion is probably pretty obvious but I’d like to hear perspectives I haven’t considered etc

(I’ve been told that the southern part of Dallas is separate from South Dallas)

I know there’s 800 posts asking about DFW, but what’s it like living in the southern part of Dallas? As many tactile specifics as possible would be super welcome.

I’m a writer so it’s research for a book, haha, only a few scenes are set there but I’ve only been to Dallas a handful of times and I don’t want locals rolling their eyes TOO badly at me.

(Protag is 19 if that changes your considerations on anything)
