Gutting the app after such a long time. Alternatives?

After using Forest since 2020 during highschool and now university, it was an almost daily companion for me. Returning to the app after semester break, I am devastated to see, what the app has become.

Removing a core feature like favourites after literally YEARS is mindblowing to me. How can anyone mess a update that much up? It was singlehandedly the most used feature of all! Anyone has their favourite tag + tree combination they use to handle daily / recurring tasks. With favourites: only two clicks. Without: Manually selecting a tree in a enormous collection and selecting a task tag within the nearly uncountable many that have accumulated over the years.

I understand that the developers need to make money. And the one time purchase I did for pro all those years ago does not bring bread to the table today is understandable, too. But WHY not switch to a subscription model for features? Will people be mad? Yes. But they use the app daily and will pay.

BUT WHY GUTTING THE CORE FEATURES OF THE APP?

It became nearly unusable for me. Choosing a timer for the next different task needs to be seamless. With as little time and effort as possible before starting the tasks or switching between tasks to keep track of time and progress. Now? ONLY FRUSTRATION

Do you guys know an alternative to track time? I let the clock run and stop it when I was finished with the task or had to do something else (no countdown timer)

Some small buildings I designed

The last few days I dabbled a bit with designing small H0 scale buildings. What do you guys think? Printed with different colors (unpainted). Even tried wood filament. Not bad, gives a better finish.

  • small shed
  • old bus stop
  • contemporary bus stop

Any Ideas for cargo?

Modelling 3D printable cargo for such low side wagons became a sub-hobby of mine within model railroading itself. Among the basics like wooden beams, corrugated iron sheets etc...

On the line I can observe sometimes, most trains transport tree trunks or cut wood. Maybe a couple of containers but nothing extraordinary.

What rather rare cargo have you seen in real life? Something special you never forgot?

Free FDM printable scatter terrain files

Hello. Just wanted to share some of my designs I made for FDM printing (some even multicolor). Intentionally, they were created for model railroading in mind, but I guess, scatter terrain is interesting for you guys, too.

From several versions of cargo crates, ammunition boxes to barrels, there is a lot available.
Everything in the picture is printed as shown, nothing painted (yet).

FDM 3D printing in the hobby is awesome. But what second hobbies or professions are also helpful for model railroading?

Hello everyone. As most of you probably know already, 3D printing has it´s own place in model railroading. But not just resin printing, but also filament printers are good enough today for many things you could possibly ever dream of.

Coming from the 3D printer space and later to the world of model railroading, I´m still amazed by how many things you can model and later have on your layout exactly as you imagined it. From cargo, scenery details, buildings to even display traintracks! Modelling such things and sharing them has become like a hobby within the hobby for me.

Question to the community here: Have some of you also used a second hobby to build things for your layout? Let it be woodworking, metalworks or similar stuff?

Designed some floor plates

I´ve recently designed some printable floors. Mainly with model railroading in mind. But talking to a friend, I realized that they are also a good fit for wargaming in general. Just wanted to share and ask for feedback. Do you guys have some use for this? I´m not that much of an warhammer player myself yet.

If anyone is interested: Files are on Makerworld

(reading the subreddit rules, this is probably an ad, but there is no patreon, kickstarter, paid files or whatever)
