I’m an old bloke who’s struggled to stick to hobbies, but I finally built a functioning mechanical puzzle for my D&D table (T-Puzzle)

Hey everyone,

A few months ago I had a shower thought which led me to create a functional piece of tabletop terrain. I subscribe to a lovely bunch over at DM Stash, and their Discord is great for submitting ideas. My brain went down a rabbit hole of encounter concepts and I just had to build this.

I am an old bloke and I have struggled most of my life keeping a hobby or even just concentrating on a project of any sort. D&D has been my only consistent thing, from forever DMing to painting minis and cutting tiny bricks out of foam to make terrain.

I have always loved seeing moving parts on the table. A lot of people have done doors, chests, windows, or ships, but I wanted to push the engineering a step further. I wanted to create a literal, physical logic puzzle for my players.

The concept is an interactive combination crypt or mausoleum where the four corner pillars aren't just decorative because they actually rotate. When players align the correct runes on the columns, a mechanical tray in the dead center physically unlocks and triggers. The grand centerpiece sarcophagus then rises to reveal the hidden loot chamber inside.

I started this months ago with rigid geometric blockouts in my CAD software to dial in the mechanical tolerances. I wanted to make sure fingers could actually reach in to turn the dials without knocking over miniatures, and that part is finally done.

Now, I have been personally attempting to make this aesthetically pleasing, so I have been watching some beginner friendly Blender tutorials to add the details.

To date, i now have 6 other concepts to do that will be similar to this T-Puzzle (terrain puzzle)

TL;DR: I have made a terrain puzzle that actually functions mechanically, and now I am working on the pretty part.

I would love to know what you think of the layout. Would a mechanical puzzle like this keep your players engaged at the table, or do they usually just try to smash the doors down with a warhammer?

A quick look at the process of creating a Scanlan's Hand miniature

One of my favorite things its seeing an idea go from a rough sculpt to a finished miniature you can actually hold in your hand.

This is the complete process behind my interpretation of Scanlan's Hand.

Starting from the initial sculpt in ZBrush, through rendering, support preparation, resin printing and finally painting.

There's something uniquely satisfying about seeing a digital sculpt slowly become a physical miniature ready to join a game session.

🚀 Legatum Noctis Is Now LIVE on Kickstarter!

I honestly can't believe I'm writing this.

After months of designing, prototyping, printing, testing, repainting, redesigning, and constantly improving the project with your feedback...

Legatum Noctis is officially LIVE on Kickstarter.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/337889120/legatum-noctis-the-ultimate-modular-tabletop-terrain

This project has grown so much since I first started sharing it online, and that's largely because of this amazing community.

Thank you for every comment, every suggestion, every question, every word of encouragement, and also every piece of constructive criticism. Some of the best improvements came from people pointing out flaws or challenging my ideas. More than once, your feedback helped me realize I was heading in the wrong direction and encouraged me to rethink parts of the project. Legatum Noctis is a much better project because of it.

I also want to give a very special thank you to everyone who donated in the early days of this project. These donations meant so much to me. They gave me the motivation and confidence to keep going at a time when this was still just an idea with a lot of uncertainty.

To everyone who donated back then: I'll be reaching out to you over the next few days with a special offer as a small token of my appreciation.

If you've enjoyed following the development and would like to help bring Legatum Noctis to even more gaming tables, I'd be incredibly grateful for your support on Kickstarter.

Whether you decide to back the project, share it with a friend, or simply keep following the journey, it all means the world to me.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being part of this journey. Let's build something amazing together. ❤️

Bailey and walls fresh from the printers!

This was a recent Kickstarter that I backed and hopefully I can start painting somewhat soon. There is a 3d printed mini for scale (I hope that is allowed!)

I am planning on printing a bastion and watchtower for each side of the walls before cracking on with the painting. As much I'd like to print more, there is a cursed storage issue, as always!

Looking for idea's on how to keep printed terrain footprints from sliding around

Hey all,

I'm printing out terrain for the newest edition of Warhammer 40k. I have my ruins/buildings done and I'm very excited about it but now I'm on to the actual footprints.

The issue I'm running into is they slide around too easily while playing and I need idea's on what I can do to the bottom of them to help them stick firmly.

I play on a neoprene mat if that makes any difference so ideally something semi abrasive, but not so much so that it chews up the play mat.

Thanks!

Idols of Torment, Underworld

Just finished painting up the recent terrain from Black Magic craft. Pretty trippy set.

The Spiders Lair

This is a small set piece I put together. It uses modular wall covers to change the aesthetic of the dungeon. The covers easily plug in place. It is a great way to add scatter terrain without having a bunch of loose stuff on the board. Most of the covers use less than 5 grams of material. I have a kickstarter prelaunch page available here. Sign up if you would like to be notified when it launches.

Is there a consensus on the best modular dungeon block system right now?

Ive always wanted a modular dungeon system like Dwarven Forge without dropping that much cash on one. Anyone know where to start?

How Legatum Noctis Works

A quick disclaimer before you watch: I accidentally say "Legatum Noc Tris" in the video. 😅 The correct name is Legatum Noctis.

With that out of the way…

In this video, I want to give you an overview of how Legatum Noctis works.

Rather than showing every single piece included in the set, I want to focus on the system itself, how the different parts fit together, how the modular design works, and how you can use it to build unique terrain for your gaming tables.

Think of this as an introduction to the ideas behind the project, and an update on what the system is all about.

I hope you enjoy it, and as always, I want to thank you for your feedback. It is highly appreciated.

And one last thing… the Kickstarter campaign for Legatum Noctis is getting very, very close now. 👀

The First Full Table Is Finally Complete

Last week I finally got to put the terrain through its biggest test yet.

Before visiting rosenheimertabletopclub, I went into full hobby mode and spent an entire week painting as much terrain as I possibly could. It definitely wasn't all display quality, but I wanted enough painted pieces to build a complete table, and it was absolutely worth the effort.

For the first time, I assembled a full board using the system, and I'm happy to say it worked exactly as I'd envisioned. Seeing everything come together was an incredibly rewarding moment after months of designing, printing, and testing.

I also want to say a huge thank you to rosenheimertabletopclub for not only letting me use their gaming space but also giving me free access to their incredible miniature collection for the photos.

Honestly, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Being able to pick from so many beautifully painted armies, create little scenes, and bring the terrain to life was an absolute blast.

Some of my favorite photos from that day are featured in this video, and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out.

Alien Planet Terrain

This is from a little while back and has since found a new home at a local gaming club. Getting a whole lot more use than my home games could allow, but felt proud of it and wanted to share to see if anyone has any advice on some painting schemes or techniques.

The files themselves can be found on my mini factory, all free and all amazing and easy to print. Mine done on the Elogoo Neptune 4 max. Makes terrain projects a breeze, especially if you're not too worried about layer lines, thick paint and layers like these had his every one.

A Costly Reminder: Don't Leave PLA Prints in a Hot Car

Consider this your friendly warning.

If you're printing terrain in PLA, don't make the same mistake I did and leave it in a car on a hot day.

I knew cars get hot in the sun, but apparently not hot enough in my mind.

A few hours later, I came back to find that an entire terrain set had warped beyond saving. Walls were bent, pieces no longer fit properly, and the whole set was basically ruined.

Straight into the trash.

It's frustrating, but I figured it was worth sharing because someone else might avoid the same mistake.

So if you've got printed terrain, miniatures, or any other PLA prints, keep them out of hot cars whenever possible.

Sometimes the most valuable test print is the one that teaches you what not to do.

Immersive Spell Markers and Props

My goal is to provide players with immersive rings and props that can be used to represent the persistent spell effects that frequently appear throughout the session. The campaign is now in pre-launch! If you're interested, you can follow it to be notified when it goes live in a couple of weeks.
