I thank God every day for not making me like feet and expensive in-game cosmetics

  • I wake up

  • Realize I don't need to buy $250 of cosmetics in a video-game

  • Money kept = money earned -> Free $250 every day

  • $91,250 annual income in cosmetics I didn't buy

Never felt so rich before.

Has anyone launched Linux native Dota 2 via lsfg-vk?

Can't get it to work with linux native dota 2 client.

(! Not through the proton layer)

I either get..:

a) fatal error on game start: "AppSystemDict: Error in Init() of interface 'RenderDeviceMgr001'"

b) doesn't launch the game at all, no error

c) doesn't generate frames

I've set the process name in the lsfg-vk-ui.

Nothing related to LS in Launch options (because it's handled by the lsfg-vk-ui)

either way tried many combinations

Anyone?

Dark Carnival - How long is the Train?

Looking carefully at the main promo image, we can see 2 prisoners in the Engine Car: there's an arm and a leg sticking out through the bars.

Another image we can use is this one depicting the full train. It's a certain clue.

Zooming 500% onto the Engine Car we can clearly see it's actually a very skinny leg with a massive foot (doesn't match none of the entries on wikifeet).

Which gives us a reference of about half a meter (0.5m) that allows us to determine the height of the Engine Car - about ~24 lengths of the leg.

Using specialized forensic tools (paint), we can safely say the Train is ~4.8 times as long as it is tall.

Using the leg-length as a multiplier we get the dimensions of the train:

Length: 57,6 meters - almost 2/3 of an American football field

Height: 12 meters - around the size of a Ford truck

The problem here - for the Train to appear this flat and not distorted at the ends the image must've been taken using a massive telephoto lens - around 600mm - and approximately 2 km away from it.

Fortunately, we know this is not possible because at this focal length the background would appear so compressed and so pulled forward to us - the Tent would fill the entire background, towering over the Train. So we have to accept this is not a real photo.

However, pay attention to the black & yellow striped domes on the train(1st, 2nd and 6th cars) - this is the exact same black & yellow striped dome that's mounted on the Tent!

Using the now-known length of the Train, we can say that the dome is about ~2 meters in width / diameter.

At Stage 2 the dome on the Tent visually appears about x3 smaller than the 2nd dome on the Train, which is exactly the multiplier we need:

since the Tent is about x6.8 times wider than the dome, we can say that the Tent is ~14-16 meters in diameter and stands ~12-14 meters tall, a bit taller than the train.

This assumes that we actually see the entire Tent and it sits on the ground.

Because we don't see the ground.

There's a chance we only see 'the tip' of the iceberg: it is very much possible that what we see is just the tip of a massive "CN Toronto Tower"-like structure.

Figuring out the distance to the Tent or the speed at which we are moving towards it is absolutely pointless and a waste of time. We already know the arrival date.

However I find it interesting that since the Tent is always in our view - directly behind the Train - the only possible explanation is we are moving around it in a spiral, gradually closing-in counter-clockwise. This coincides with the disorienting nature of the Wheel of Fortune which the main antagonist of the event definitely knows how to use.

Quick question about unused apps

№1 The hell do I have 3 terminals/shells for? Alacrity + Konsole + Kitty

I use Kitty but seems like there are system apps that use the other two. I.e. when I upgrade system it autolaunches Alacrity and some other app seems to use Konsole.

Can I / Should I remove them... safely? I'd be fine with just Kitty.

№2 Similar question about the apps I never open: Vim, Micro, Kate, Qt Assistant, Qt D-Bus Viewer, Qt-Linguist, Qt Widget Designer, etc.

Are these important for any reason? I assume by removing these apps they won't be updated which is going to save on time to update and drive space, especially considering all the cached packages.

Anyway, any advice here?

Microphone vs Nash Equilibrium: An argument against "mute all" stance

if you've ever been interested in game design or/and economics you might be familiar with "Nash Equilibrium". It's a Nobel prize winning concept so probably worth paying attention to.

We can use it too.

"A Nash Equilibrium occurs when no player can benefit by unilaterally changing their strategy while others keep theirs unchanged."

It somehow... took me a while to put 2 and 2 together to realize that Nash Equilibrium is not exclusive to competitive player interactions.

It's also just as applicable to cooperative player interactions.

Most of you here - are god gamers, so should be familiar with the Prisoner's Dilemma and Stag/Rabbit Hunt 'games'. The 'trick' to winning in these games is... communicating with the other party.

If you don't (or can't) communicate - you and the other party can (and will) bet on yourselves only because that's the only option that's reliable. Everyone ends up playing 'their own game'.

This makes all plays involving you 'smaller': less proactive, more reactive. More railroaded & more predictable. There's more hesitation between actions. Bigger delays.

All that ultimately leads to the scariest thing in life - lower MMR.

In a sense, communicating (communicating well*) is the only way to defy Nash Equilibrium. You want to go for the biggest game - the Stag, instead of all individually hunting for Rabbits.

Thanks
