PSA: Please don't smoke pot on BART; it literally makes me (and others) sick

BART travelers: For those of you who choose to smoke pot on the train (or just before getting on the train), please reconsider for the sake of your fellow passengers who have a bad reaction to the smoke. As someone who suffers from asthma and motion sickness, I find pot smoke in an enclosed train almost unbearable (especially if the train car is warm and poorly ventilated). By the end of my 55-minute commute, I am reeling from nausea, headache, and shortness of breath. It takes me several hours to feel better.

If this only happened rarely, I would not complain. But it happens almost daily. I can't usually see who is smoking or was recently smoking, so there isn't much I can do. Wearing a regular mask doesn't help, and wearing a full-on N-95 is unpleasant in its own right. So I have to depend on other passengers being willing to follow the rules. I imagine I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thanks for listening!

Definitely 100% a shorebird (Coyote Point, San Mateo, CA)

There were two side-by-side, getting breakfast from the rocks, but the first one flew away before I could get her in the photo!

Donate blood this week if you can! Major shortage here and nationwide.

For all you eligible blood donors, this would be a great time to make a donation. Red Cross is reporting historic nationwide shortages, and Stanford Blood Center has an urgent need listed for all blood types. If you've never donated before, you can check your eligibility online ahead of time. Note that restrictions against blood donation by LGBT folks have recently been lifted - finally! I'm not affiliated with a donation center; I'm just a regular donor and a grateful patient whose life was saved by blood donations a few years ago when my youngest child was born. Thank you for helping our community!

Proof you can make oat milk in 60 seconds with a blender (re: yesterday's sad water cereal)

This post is for u/party_poison8095 , who yesterday shared a heartbreaking snapshot of breakfast cereal floating in a glass of water, captioned "I ran out of oat milk." Well... today I had the same problem, but I did *not* use the same solution. Folks, I know this sub portrays our basest instincts to survive, but there are some depths to which I refuse to sink. <gets off soapbox, takes a bow>

New study on Antarctic tour guides who quit because they can't take the hypocrisy - does this resonate with you?

I've never been to Antarctica but, as an ecologist who loves traveling, I have long dreamt of visiting someday. Now I'm reconsidering that dream in light of a study by three social scientists who specialize in polar tourism. This blog post on The Conversation summarizes their peer-reviewed academic paper.

The authors interviewed two dozen Antarctic tour guides who quit their jobs even though they loved working in Antarctica. They quit because they could no longer bear the hypocrisy of teaching tourists about fragile ecosystems and the dangers of climate change - while at the same time disturbing the ecosystems and worsening climate change. (Getting to Antarctica requires more CO2 emissions than just about anywhere else.)

For those of you who have been to Antarctica, I'm curious if this critique resonates with you. Do tour companies behave scrupulously (despite the environmental impacts of getting there)? Or is profit prioritized over caution, and "Disneyfication" over genuine education?

The authors and interviewees predict a big increase in the already-booming Antarctic tourism business in the next decade, and I'm no longer sure if I want to participate in that. Maybe instead I should just continue to enjoy the Gentoo penguin photo hanging in my bathroom.

Made goldenberry marmalade today! It took forever but turned out well. Swipe to see the process from beginning to end. (SF Bay Area, California)

Anyone familiar with Freel Peak near Lake Tahoe? Is this story as extreme as it sounds - taking an 18-month-old baby mountain biking on remote trails in the snow at 10,000 feet, without checking conditions? Or am I missing some context with which it makes more sense? I'm relieved they're safe!

Lunch of leftovers! White rice, green beans, corn, nutritional yeast, hemp protein powder, sesame oil, and soy sauce. I promise it tasted better than it looked.

Here are 12 photos I took yesterday on an 8.5-mile hike yesterday through the Rancho San Vicente portion of Calero County Park (San Jose) on the Lisa Killough and Cottle trails. Much of the landscape is serpentine, and the plant diversity is amazing. Please enjoy - but if you go hiking this weekend, beware of rattlesnakes; I saw two huge ones!

Buckbrush

Foreground: Western flax (unsure of species) and California poppy; background: seep monkeyflower

Elegant clarkia

Crimson flax

Indian paintbrush (unsure of species) and fairy-lantern side by side

Farewell-to-spring (ruby chalice clarkia)

Butterfly mariposa lily

Hey fans - for those of you who have been wanting to see the movie in theaters one more time, be aware that a lot of theaters are concluding its run today. I saw it on opening day but had been wanting to go back again with my son and some friends, and was alarmed to discover that today, Wednesday the 29th, is the last day it will be showing in almost all of our local theaters (in the San Francisco Bay Area, California). I was able to find one theater that is showing tomorrow, but starting Friday there are absolutely no showings anywhere. So just a heads up!
