Opus 5.5. rocks in browser-based game development
Yes, I will self-promote, but firstly, I want to talk to SOMEONE about how exciting this is.
I have been creating browser-based games for the last 18 months or so, and mostly relied on coding with frontier or even open weight models. I was often disappointed, as there always seemed to be a last barrier that would lift a "PoC"-looking game into an actualy playable game that people would enjoy.
Last time I tried with Astra, and while it produced something that you could actually play, it still felt way off and I had to correct too many things by hand. I even ended up letting Astra build me a game engine around my game so I can just put the game together myself. This was with a tycoon-like game with a servers/AI theme.
I then wanted to test my ideas on Opus 5.5. I started by asking Opus to consume the project specs from the Astra game and then I brainstormed with Opus on copying these ideas over to a Roman Empire themed game. And this is where Opus already shined. It created a really good spec document and helped me to draft a good implementation plan. Within the first 5 hours limit (I am on the pro plan btw), I already had a playable game that I enjoyed. And Opus took care of all the visuals in the beginning.
Opus 5.5 even picked up the "make the game juice and addictive to play" parts and translated this into design elements that I could have not come up with.
It might be that no one else wants to play it, but I find it fun and engaging. I also played around with adding 2 models from Mashy (no advertisment intended) and they were integrated quite nicely.
I am using medium by the way, only used high for initial planning and design.
The verdict is: Finally you can create your own games by just describing them and not having to use third-party tools (e.g. for assets), if you can live with a simple browser game. I think this is already achievement enough. I also tested Godot development with Astra, but did not test it with Opus yet.
I hope it's ok to say this: In case you want to check it out yourself, you can play it for free here: https://empire-tycoon.com/
Any feedback is very welcome, as I want to participate in a contest and want to polish the game more. Currently, it provides between 2,5 and 3 hours of playtime.
