In the TNL discussion of how SCOTUS confirmation politics interacts with the midterms, they ignored the worst and most likely possibility: Democrats win the senate, Alito retires, and Republicans confirm a nominee before the new senate takes over.
Also, the idea that McConnell would turn against his singular mission in life—filling the court with Republicans—on his way out of the Senate is laughable. He’s a lock-in vote for anyone Trump nominates.
