i’m coming from chicago, which has a really vibrant music scene, and want to explore the boston scene more. also figured it could be a fun way to meet people and make friends with similar music taste.

i’m mostly into indie/alternative/rock stuff; artists like courtney barnett, sleater kinney, fiona apple, mj lenderman, feeble little horse, porches, cate le bon, big thief, etc. always down to discover new artists and check out local bands!

hi all! i am applying for a new indian passport and accidentally provided the wrong file no. for my current passport. i submitted the passport seva application, but i did not start the VFS application or pay the fees.

can i simply create a new application and use that ARN number for my VFS application? or do i need to make sure the first submitted application is deleted/create a new account for the new application?

while in the VFS document checklist it says to simply submit a new application, i'm worried this issue may cause delays in passport renewal if they get confused about which submitted application is the right one to consider.

anyone have any experience with this?

my current apartment in lincoln park raised rent by almost 40%. they offered it to me at a 30% increase but it’s currently listed higher. i am moving out of chicago so had no dog in the game and was happy to exit while my rent was still extremely affordable. however, this made me question how normal rent increases like this are??? i know its not illegal but almost feels like it should be.

for context, this is a 550-600 sq ft 1bed1bath in a building with no real amenities except rooftop and elevator. the unit itself has an outdated kitchen and no dishwasher, and overall feels old. it served me super well for the price i was paying but absolutely not worth 40% more.

another bizarre thing is that my neighbours’ rents (they have more updated units with stainless steel kitchen appliances and a dishwasher) only increased by $100, and i know tenants in the building who lived there for 5-10 years and only saw about a total of $200-$300 in rent increase through the course of their stay.

im just a bit shocked at this. the landlord claims its because of property taxes increasing and updates made to the building. the updates just being things that shouldve been done long time ago like replacing decades old stinky carpets in the hallways, and painting light green walls that had splashes of random white paint all over.

i understand rent prices in chicago increased a lot this year than it did in previous years but i still see plenty apartments at prices ive seen the past two years, and any fluctuations noticed have been only about a 5-10% increase.

has anyone else experienced this egregious rent increase?

hi all! im about to sign a lease for an apartment i absolutely adore. however, the heat is not included in the rent. i didn’t think this would be too much of an added cost until i read a bunch of posts here about average gas costs for a 1 bed being $200-$300 per month in the winter, and sometimes over $500.

this is really stressing me out and making me not want to sign the lease and go for other units with heat included instead.

i know this is pretty vague but wondering if any one has any thoughts here? what should i do? since i haven’t lived there and only toured virtually i really can’t tell what to expect with utilities but know that i cant afford more than $200-$300 per month with electricity included.

for reference, its baseboard heating. i found a few apartments at a similar price with heat included but just dont love them as much.
