Aaron Swartz’s Open Access Manifesto in 25 languages

Years ago, I created a website in memory of Aaron Swartz to make the Guerilla Open Access Manifesto available in different languages, with translations contributed by people from around the world.

I recently revived the project as a much simpler static website. It currently has 25 languages:

https://openaccess.eza.link

Corrections and missing translations are very welcome.

Working on it again also made me wonder what Aaron would be doing today. So many of the questions he cared about, access to knowledge, concentrated corporate power, control of the internet and political organizing, seem even more consequential and relevant today.

I wonder how Aaron would have responded to the challenges we are facing today.

Why I'm returning my Fairbuds

I recently bought the Fairbuds for €99 because I strongly support the idea behind them: replaceable batteries, repairable components and a product designed to last longer than typical true-wireless earbuds.

Unfortunately, after testing them for some days, I’ve decided to return them.

The main issue is the battery reporting. The percentages shown in the Fairbuds app were often delayed or inconsistent. At different points, the app showed values such as 30% and 40%, then suddenly changed both earbuds to 80% without any meaningful charging. On another test, one earbud remained stuck at 30% for a long time while the other continued dropping.

I eventually performed a continuous playback test with ANC enabled. The left earbud stopped after about four hours, even though the app was still showing 20% shortly before it switched off. Four hours is not terrible and would normally be sufficient for much of my daily use, but I also make long Signal calls with my family, sometimes while walking my dog. Calls generally consume more battery, so reliable battery information matters to me.

The second problem was Linux connectivity. I use a ThinkPad running Linux and could not connect the Fairbuds easily or reliably. My Anker headphones and Liberty 4 NC earbuds connect without similar problems, so this was a noticeable regression for my setup.

The third issue was the limited touch controls. They cannot be customized enough for my use. As a simple example, I frequently listen to German-language podcasts as part of learning the language, and being able to skip back a few seconds to hear a sentence again is important. With my current earbuds, I can configure the controls more flexibly.

There were also positive aspects. I listened to podcasts and music and made several calls, and I found both the audio quality and microphone quality good enough. My father and mother could hear me clearly during calls, although I made the tests mostly indoors. The ANC was also adequate for my needs, and I appreciate the repairable design very much.

My current Anker Liberty 4 NC illustrates exactly why repairability matters. After about two years and nine months, its battery life has dropped from more than six hours to less than two. The call quality, ANC and connectivity remain good, but the batteries cannot be replaced easily, so an otherwise functional product is approaching the end of its useful life.

That is why I wanted the Fairbuds to work for me. But I cannot justify spending €99 on earbuds with unreliable battery telemetry, limited controls and connectivity problems with my laptop, even though I use them mostly with my mobile.

One final, smaller disappointment: Fairphone appears no longer to be active on its Mastodon account and does not mention Mastodon or the Fediverse in its marketing emails. I originally discovered Fairphone through recommendations on the Fediverse, and I have otherwise been a happy Fairphone 5 customer for almost a year and a half. It would be good to see the company participate more actively in that community.

P.S. I tested the microphone again for about 50 minutes, this time outdoors. Both of my parents could hear me clearly. I even asked whether they noticed anything strange about my voice or the audio quality, but they didn't.

I also tried connecting to the Fairbuds app again, but it just keeps saying “Connecting…”. Meanwhile, my Fairphone's battery indicator shows the earbuds at 30%. At this point, I'm not sure I can trust that number either.

Brazil vs Japan - Monday 19:00

Any Brazilians in Berlin watching Brazil vs Japan on Monday at 19:00?

I was thinking of watching it at a Biergarten in Kreuzberg (e. g. Golgatha) or Schöneberg (e. g. Naumannpark). Anyone interested in joining?
