Whisper Series Edger

As far as I can tell, Home Depot doesn’t offer a Ryobi stick edger kit based on the 17-inch Whisper Series (WS) powerhead, unless it's part of a kit with that also includes other attachments. They do offer an edger-only stick edger kit based on the lower-rated powerhead from the Ryobi 15-inch NON-WS trimmer. That seems like a strange choice, because an edger has a higher power requirement than a string trimmer, given its heavy steel blade directly contacting soil and brushing against concrete walkways.

I recently bought the Ryobi 8-inch, wheel edger attachment and paired it with the WS powerhead from my 17-inch string trimmer. This is a really nice combo. It has plenty of power to cut through dense St Augustine grass and put down a clean edge in a single pass. Because my grass sticks up much higher than the sidewalk, I had to trim the plastic guard around the blade, but that wasn’t too difficult.

I prefer having a dedicated trimmer and a dedicated edger (no swapping attachments back and forth), so now I’ll have to buy another WS string trimmer to allocate its powerhead and battery to the edger attachment.

Greenworks 60V Edger

I'm considering purchasing the Greenworks model ED60L212 edger (SKU: 2703302). Couldn't find much info about it here, hopefully somebody has firsthand experience with it. I like this edger because it has the highest power output among GW edgers according to the specs on GW website.

Compared to other brands, I also like that GW mounts the edger motor down at the wheel, which would seem to offer three benefits:

  1. Direct couples the motor to blade without the need for a long vertical driveshaft and a 90-degree gear, i.e., more mechanically efficient with less possible failure points

  2. Lets the wheel carry the weight of the motor, reducing the weight you have to carry in your hand

  3. Gets the high-pitched noise from the motor farther from your ear

My use case is a suburban lot just over a quarter acre with a well-maintained lawn. I'm confident the GW edger could do the job, I just wonder if I'd miss the overkill ease with which my gas-powered ECHO edger does it. Among the very few videos of the GW edger, I see videos of people making double passes to get a clean edge. My ECHO gives me a clean edge in a single, high-speed pass. But this could be a function of whether the lawn is overgrown/unkempt in the first place. Would appreciate any firsthand feedback.

Tried turbo mode

I recently picked up a 21-in, 60V, Greenworks mower, model MO60L810. I use it to mow my noise sensitive rear and side yards, about 4000 sq ft of lawn area. The mower has produced acceptable cut quality on my thick St Augustine lawn, but I decided to try using turbo mode this past weekend. The cut quality significantly improved – close to my gas mower – but the power usage increased by more than I anticipated. It took me about 30 min to mow that area and I fully drained one 8 Ah pack (480Wh). Only one blinking LED was lit upon completion, indicating a thoroughly drained battery.

That means the mower consumed 480 Wh/0.5 h = 960 W average power consumption. That’s well over 1 hp continuous power, which is actually quite a lot by battery mower standards. I should mention that I use only mulch mode, self-propel everywhere except the tight spots, my grass is very dense and I was cutting it from 6 inches down to 3 inches in one pass. All those factors increase power usage, but prior to running in turbo mode I could do all that on roughly half the capacity of one battery. I was surprised how much more power it drew in turbo mode.

Going forward, I plan to use turbo mode all the time because I value cut quality. I have two of the 8 Ah packs, so I’ll just charge them both the night before I mow and swap batteries when the first one reaches the halfway point. That will avoid discharging either one to a low state, which should improve longevity.

How many of you run turbo mode exclusively and how much did it increase power usage for you?

Greenworks 60V, 21-inch, multiblade, self-propelled, w/ 8Ah, MO60L810

I don't see a lot of info on this mower, so I thought I'd start a thread for people to post info about it - reviews, suggestions, hacks, etc. I recently picked one up from Walmart on sale for $398, including a fast charger and 8Ah.

Although I have a Ryobi blower and trimmer, I like a few things about this model over Ryobi's 21-in offerings: steel deck, compact dimensions, high user ratings. GW tech support told me it has a 1500W motor. Most of the higher end 21-inch models from Ryobi and EGO have 1000W motors. Every bit of extra power is precious with these e-mowers.

I've used Honda gas mowers for years, with great performance and reliability. I still have a 6-year old model that I will continue to use to cut most of my yard. I needed a more quiet mower to cut a 3000 sq-ft area where some wildlife resides.
