Just a quail boy wearing a hat

Don’t worry, I took it off straight away, but it did make me giggle 😂

How do you have your cockapoo cut?

Little Bob Ross impersonator here will be going for her cut tomorrow, poor baby can’t see 😂 What cut do you have for your cockapoo? I usually have like a teddy bear cut for her, but I find not enough gets cut off and I’m back at the groomers couple of weeks later. Lately, I’ve just asked for them to cut her as short as possible, but not skinned, just to give more time before cuts. However, I’m tempted one day to get the poodle cut 🥹

Can’t cope with the cuteness

It’s been very warm in the UK today, so I’ve been checking on the birdies loads. Came out, my little snowflakes are all snuggled in their tree 😭 I love how much these guys love to perch! I’ve found these guys have dealt with the warmth a lot better than my jumbo whites as well. Does anyone know if California Quails are similar to these guys with the perching behaviour? They’re the next type of quail I’d love!

Noisy bob whites!

They always call out to each other! Ones on the other side of the aviary, which they can get through using the inside bit, but I don’t think they’ve figured it out yet as I’ve now mixed them all together with my British whites. Everyone gets on very well! Rubbish quality as per on my phone though, sorry for the blurriness lol.

Help sexing please!

Hiya everyone! My snowflake bobwhites are a bit older now, they’re 9/10 weeks. But Jesus Christ these things love to fly. Picking up and separating was CRAZY! But I’ve separated what I think are boys and girls. Could I have your opinion if you agree please or let me know if I’ve made any mistakes. Surplus boys will be rehomed as I need the right balance, will only look to keep 1 I think. The first one is housed inside at the moment due to a head injury, but I think she’s a girl! Thanks everyone as always for your kindness and help 😊

Anyone have trouble with the slicker brush?

Hi everyone, many thanks to all your help and support in combating resource guarding. All your tips I’m using and implementing to try and take control of things 😊

However, another struggle we have twice a week is brush time. The comb she is fine with but the slicker brush, it’s so so tough and she constantly bites. This is somethings she’s done since 8 weeks old and no source of reward has ever changed it, worst is, she doesn’t do this at the groomers! She’s good as gold they say! Anyone have any tips on this?

After a battle, she’s all freshly brushed 😅

My snowflakes are growing up

My little snowflakes are 7 weeks now! However, I think I have a lot of males 😭 A poor little one has been bullied and pecked on his head, so he’s been separated while he heals and being spoilt inside which he’s loving haha. Hopefully I can vent sex in the next week or two and start separating, but I think by some of their faces, they’re male, what do you think?

Resource guarding

Hiya everyone, new here 😊 I have a beautiful cockapoo, her name is Luna and she’ll be 2 in November. However, she’s developed resource guarding where she’s very possessive over treats. Is this common in cockapoos? She’s my first one, I’m not sure if it’s something I’ve done wrong by spoiling her as any chew treats like tracheas, rabbits ears, etc that take time to chew, I’ve let her have a little collection because she loves to chew, but not sure if I’ve contributed to this by letting her have so many at a time and I feel really awful if I’ve done this by spoiling her. I had a Dalmatian before her and I never had this issue. Is there anything I can do? Any help or advice is appreciated! I’ve taken them away at the moment, and she just has occasional treats that she can eat straight away to prevent this.

Anyone hatched mountain quail before?

I ordered some Mountain Quail eggs months ago and was on a waiting list, they’re being posted to me next week! They were very expensive, and I could only get 6 this time round. So I hope I can get a couple to hatch. I know they have a longer incubation, but having looking online, apparently these chicks are harder to care for, just wondering if anyone else has had this experience? Thanks! 😊

Other half of the aviary has been occupied!

Our snowflake bob white chicks have made the transition into the other half of the aviary! They’ve been quite wary at first, but they’re all slowly gaining confidence exploring! More things to come for enrichment, but they needed to get out the brooder 😂

Quail city has been expanded!

Got my an aviary extended today and I’m so happy! There’s an entrance for the quails to get in either side, but I’m just waiting on a delivery of sand, water and feed dispenser, and hides before I can let them go in and out, I’m so happy! 🥹

Thoughts?

Hi everyone, sorry it’s me again, I hope you all know how much I appreciate your support! Just wondering if anyone does this at all or has some hints and tips. Instead of selling the eggs, I’d love to be a breeder of different types of quail, I just love raising the chicks so much and would mean I could then focus and monitor fertility rates myself. I was thinking of turning my shed into the place to keep the brooders and the chicks. I’m not sure if anyone has done something like is, I’ve looked into potentially getting an electrician to fit a plug in or could this be done with some sort of outdoor generator so I could have the heat lamps and plates running? Any recommendations? Thanks again :)

Chance of crossbreeding?

Hi everyone! I have a 12ft aviary at the moment, which I’m having extended to be another 12ft on the other side on 19th June. I have hatched my beautiful 17 snowflake bob white chicks and I’m looking to next hatch some California quails. Of course I won’t be able to keep all of these depending on the make and female ratio. But, didn’t think these two breeds could cross breed together or with my British white quails as I did plan on housing them all together in one large space - will this impact fertile egg production? Any help is appreciated!

So happy with the progress of these chicks!

Couldn’t be more proud of my snowflake bobwhite chicks progress. They’re coming along so healthy and I’m just so happy! 🥰 First picture is just a cage I put them in while cleaning out their main brooder, but I just love their patterns and feathering! I found these chicks a lot more less tame then my British whites, not sure if that’s a common thing, but I’m still trying 😅

Opinions please!

Hiya, looking for opinions please! I sell my fertile eggs for incubating and I always ask for feedback. Quite a few of my customers say they’re not having the best success rate or having some quail with issues. I’ve done several batches hatching my eggs since February and I always have 80-90% success rate. I’ve stopped selling them because it’s just not nice to have the poor feedback and it just makes me feel bad, but I can’t see anything wrong with them or my quail. Any advice?

Broody hen!

Hi everyone, I still can’t believe I have a broody hen! She’s very obsessed with sitting on her clutch, I’m checking on her constantly. If by some miracle she manages to hatch any chicks, do I need to take them off her? I like in the UK, so the weather isn’t exactly the greatest. Wouldn’t want to leave them to die, but also feel awful she’s done all that work to not have the chicks with her if it does happen. Any help is appreciated, it’s a very very slim chance anyway, she may abandon the clutch, or they’ve got cold at some point, etc, but you never know!

Aviary clean out!

Done something different on the aviary, I’ve done half soil and half sand for them and they seem to love it! I have a broody hen that refuses to come off some eggs too, so she kept me company whilst I done it. Is this something anyone’s ever done as substrate?
