trip report - suggested routes - guadalupe river > twisted sisters > bandera > blanco

I thought I'd thrown down some route suggestions if anyone gets itchy boots and wants to get out of town this summer.

weather: We did this route recently and the temps were surprisingly mild for June. The heavy cloud cover kept temps under 90º with the occasional light shower to cool things off. I doubt that weather will stick through July or August, but definitely take advantage of this cooler summer. It's been my third trip out to hill country since covid and honestly the roads are better in the summer/fall than in winter/spring months.

route: This avoids as many highways as possible. obviously have to hit mopac and 290 to get out/in of town. And if taking 290 back, time it right, the stoplights can be brutal after a long weekend of riding. An option for north side residents is to find a route to marble falls and take 1431 back into town.

roads: very little construction right now once outside of austin. 39 is totally clear after last year's flooding, but emotion warning, this goes by camp mystic. Can be a bit eerie with the visible damage and loss of life. 335 has been closed before, but most of the low water crossings are totally rebuilt. The three twisted sisters 335, 336, 337 are all in fine condition. Many areas are missing the center line paint, but no biggie. The biggest hazard besides your riding talent are roadkill and fallen rocks.

hidden gem: Old Blanco Road is awesome, a lot like Cow Creek, some areas feel like a wide golf path. if you find it, don't fuck this up austin, keep it a secret (no facebook posts lol)

stops: Honestly, most of these towns have below average food options. Finding good coffee or espresso is not easy outside of Kerrville or Bandera. Bandera is probably the most touristy and is a cheesy cowboy town. But be prepared to eat a lot of food from gas stations.

Traffic: Practically none, but there is a small chance to get stuck behind a diesel pick-up or a local, but rarely an issue unlike the roads closer to Austin.

Favorites: Leaky - Vanderpoole is my fave section. The group enjoyed North 336, it has really good sightlines so best for sport bikes. 335 has the most whoopties so it’s really fun to haul ass. Literally never came across any vehicles other than our group on 335 and 336. A previous trip I went to Garner State Park and is awesome place. Don’t bother with Utopia, it’s mostly flat.

Have fun y'all, keep the rubber side down.

sold the rattle box to carvana - car has low depreciation - I wonder if the GR86 holds value as much

Bought the 2022 limited for $27,400 with 8900 miles on it in 2024. Sold it almost exactly 2 years later with 16,800 miles for $25,800. Not a bad deal. $1600 to drive an awesome sports car for 24 months was well worth it (plus all the other expenses of owning and operating every car).

It was an interesting ownership experience that had its ups and downs, I won't elaborate much unless anyone cares. Overall the experience was super positive, but I do have some gripes. Very happy with the sale price and Carvana picked up from house with the least amount of sale friction I've ever dealt with.

Should I do a private sale, or do trade in with carmax? Its super low milage, no mods other than a strut tower brace. There are some dings on the rear quarter panel that are not noticeable except for extreme lighting conditions. I put brand new Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 recently.

Love this machine, been an awesome ownership experience, but I'm upgrading and trying to find a buyer that can appreciate the care I put into it and low milage.

LCR eats another bike and rider

decreasing radius turns deserve respect - unfortunately I failed at that respect.

Good news - no injuries, strategically landed in soft spot on side of road.

Bad news - bike hit a tree stump, flipped and sustained some shitty damage that exceeded what was a rather tame lowside.
