Update: Darn Tough socks after 4 years of city commuting (warranty tested, what actually wore out)

Follow up to my old sock hunt: I bought several pairs of Darn Tough merino crew socks in 2022 after seeing them recommended here for daily wear. I wanted something that could handle lots of walking, subway stairs, and getting squashed into shoes while I run between work and evening hobbies.

How they held up: I rotate six pairs and wear them year round. Most still look and feel almost new, just a bit less plush in the heel. No stretched-out ankles, no sagging, and they never developed that permanent funky smell my old cotton packs always did.

What failed: One pair developed a thin spot right at the ball of the foot. Totally my fault; I tend to pivot there when I carry a tote with a board game box. It did not turn into a massive hole, but it was clearly headed that way.

Warranty experience: I finally tested the warranty last month. I followed the instructions, mailed the worn pair in, and got a replacement without any drama. Turnaround was a couple of weeks, which made me feel a lot better about paying more up front.

BIFL take: They are not literally forever, but rotating them plus the warranty has basically solved my sock problem for commuting. If anyone has a non-US brand that has held up as well, I would love to hear about it.

Sofa research dump after my last one finally died, would love sanity checks from people who own these

Long time lurker, first real post. Mods if this is more of a BIFLRequests thing feel free to remove, I tried to make it discussion not "tell me what to buy" but I get if the line's blurry.

Context: just moved to California for a new job. Old sofa was a hand me down I'd had for like 9 years across three moves, frame finally cracked during this last move and the upholstery was beyond saving anyway. So starting from scratch and I want to actually buy something this time instead of inheriting another one.

Budget reality check before anyone tells me to just buy Stickley, yeah I'd love to drop 4k+ on something true BIFL but I cannot right now. Ceiling is around 1800-2200 for a 3 seater or small sectional. I know that's basically the danger zone where stuff looks great for two years then collapses, which is exactly why I've been reading this sub instead of just buying the first Article sofa my coworker recommended lol.

What I care about, roughly in order: kiln dried hardwood frame (non negotiable), removable covers, decent springs (8 way tied ideal but sinuous is fine), 1.8+ lb foam, and something I won't hate in 5 years so none of the super trendy curvy stuff.

Ok here's the shortlist:

Article. Sven, Ceni, the usuals. Kiln dried hardwood per their site. Reviews are super split, some people 5 years in say it's solid, others say cushions are pancakes by year 2. Leather seems to hold up better than fabric from what I've read. Covers aren't removable on most models though which is almost a dealbreaker for me.

Burrow. Modular, ships in boxes. I like the modular thing for future moves. Kiln dried hardwood frame. Multiple threads here say cushions are the weak spot and they're not exactly cheap either. Feels more like well designed IKEA than actual BIFL to me but I might be wrong.

Castlery. Newer in the US. Nice looking stuff in budget, hardwood frames, removable covers on certain models. Problem is I genuinely cannot find anyone with 3+ years to confirm long term durability. If anyone here has had one past year 3 please chime in.

Outer. These guys are outdoor only as far as I know, but a friend kept bringing them up when I mentioned I was sofa shopping so I looked anyway. Pricier than I expected, def above my budget for what I'd want. Frames look solid from the photos and the sustainability angle is cool if it's real. Not really in the running for me but figured I'd mention them since people on here sometimes ask about outdoor BIFL stuff too.

Sixpenny. Slipcovered Belgian linen look. Above budget for most models but smaller stuff creeps into range on sale. Slipcovers are huge for longevity, you can wash them, swap them, replace them later. Kiln dried hardwood. Main concerns are the slouchy look isn't for everyone and the linen pills, which I've heard from a couple people here. Actually wait I should double check the linen thing because I think it depends a lot on the specific weave they use, don't quote me on that one.

Stuff I already ruled out: IKEA (fine for first apartment not BIFL), West Elm (too many QC horror stories on this sub alone), Pottery Barn (the actually durable lines are out of budget at my size), anything Wayfair or Amazon under 1k (pine, staples, glue), Crate & Barrel Lounge II (tempting but 2800+ for the size I need).

Where I'm leaning right now, low confidence: probably Article or Sixpenny on sale, Castlery as wildcard if I can find a long term owner. The non removable cover thing keeps pulling me away from Article though, idk.

What I'd love from this sub: if you own any of these past the 3 year mark, how are they actually holding up, like real wear not month 6 honeymoon reviews. Am I missing anything obvious in this budget range that's more BIFL than it sounds? And am I overweighting the removable cover thing?

Not in a rush, would rather wait two months and get it right than buy in week one and regret it for the next decade. Thanks for reading.

33 years x 33 tools: Victorinox Swiss Champ for life

Gifted on my 12th birthday by my late father, cherished every day since. Has resided in my right-front pocket nearly every single day minus flights, and a few days in a lake before getting fished out and wiped off. Original ballpoint pen still works, scissors razor sharp despite nearly daily use, magnifying glass crystal clear. Logo chipped off about a decade ago, otherwise a true Champ.

natural fiber tees that dont pill after 6 months?

gone through maybe 8 brands of tees in the last 2 years. every single one pills out within 6 months, sometimes faster. cotton ones look like lint magnets by wash 10

spent like $35 on a merino wool tee once thinking that would fix it. moths got to it before i even got 3 months of wear. so that was fun

my girlfriend pointed at my shirt last week and asked if i got it from a thrift store. it was 4 months old. cool thanks

im just throwing money at this hoping something works. been hearing about hemp and bamboo blends but every brand says "built to last" and then you get this sad pilling mess by october

anyone actually worn natural fiber tees past the 6 month mark?? curious what held up. dont skip if you put them through a dryer because im not air drying anything

Oster Kitchen Centers

I recently bought these two Oster Kitchen Centers for $20 CAD each. I now have most of not all of the more important attachments.

The dial potentiometer was making the machine shift quickly from fast to slow, glitching really.

I unscrewed the bottom to gain access to the back of the potentiometer.

I then used DeoxIT D5 contact cleaner and sprayed it in the hole at the back of it.

Turn the knob a few times to work the solution in and the problem is solved.

These machines are built like tanks and with a little maintenance can last past my lifetime and my kids will own them if they want to keep them.

What's your favorite attachment?

What do you like to use it for most?

Dyson stick vacuum drawbacks?

I’ve seen a lot of praise for Dyson vacuums, but I’m so weary of spending that much money on something i already have (cordless stick vacuum for $80).
My biggest complaint with my Hoover stick vac is that i have to spend 15 min unclogging the stick like every time i use it. With a dog and two cats, the shedding is INTENSE. but i really don’t want the bulky corded Dyson either.

Dyson stick owners, how often do you have to unclog the thing? I’ve seen some complaints about battery lifespan and run time. Is the performance of the Dyson really worth paying triple what i already spent on my other stick?

Thank you !!

Do floss holders help save on floss usage?

I was considering buying a floss holder, mainly because I think I waste a lot of floss by having to wrap it around the fingers. A floss pick uses like 1 inch of floss, but I must use at least 12 or 15 when flossing. So I wanted a "permanent" floss pick, and I found out that floss holders exist.

So I thought such a holder would help save money on floss. But the recommendations I see often mention models where you have to wrap it around a round thing. And that they are not so easy to use, since you cannot easily bend them, they are larger than your fingers, etc.

So, in the end, do they actually end up saving on floss usage?

NOT bifl: levis jeans buyer beware

bought a pair of $85 Levi's from Target in January. By April, there were rips and a hole in the jeans by the seams. I religiously wash and HANG DRY my jeans as to not cause extra stress on the fabric and to prevent holes or tearing in the dryer. Lo and behold, hole in the BRAND NEW JEANS. Had to submit 3 separate warranty forms, go through 4 different representatives before they accepted and gave me an $85 coupon that magically only covers $60 for the jeans, not shipping. Levis is not what it used to be and their customer service sucks, too.

Before anyone comes for me I bought these two sizes up as per Levis suggestion, so the holes are not due to wearing the wrong size and I literally work a desk job, no crazy wear and tear going on, just shit materials. Also I just sewed the hole up and now I have two pairs of crappy jeans lol

Looking for good suggestions for new kitchenware.

I have to replace my crappy kitchenware bc my roommates destroyed what i had before. What sorta brands or materials should I look for? Is 500$ a good budget to work with? My new stuff will be private use only, so I'd like to get something nicer than Walmart plates.

Almost four years of pet hair. Roomba is still working, but “set and forget” is a lie.

I know robot vacuums are not the most BIFL category and somebody is probably already warming up their keyboard to tell me a 1980s Kirby would outlive civilization. Fair. But my iRobot Roomba has survived two dogs, one cat, a gravel driveway, and a household that produces fur like it is trying to insulate the walls. That counts for something. The honest review is this: yes, pets mean more maintenance. Not a little more. Real more. Hair wraps around the rollers, the side brush gets sad, the filter clogs faster, and once the filter is packed the whole “deep cleaning” idea becomes nonsense because suction drops and fine dust just hangs around. I replace filters early, cut hair out weekly, wipe sensors, check the wheels, and empty the dock before it becomes a warm bag of dog smell. Annoying? kinda. Worth it? also kinda. It keeps the daily layer of dander, litter dust, crumbs, and outdoor grit from becoming a weekend disaster, and that matters for breathing, pets, and just not feeling gross in your own house.

But I would never call it maintenance free. More like a tiny employee who works every day and demands benefits in the form of rollers. Anyone here gotten five plus years out of a robot in a pet house? What actually failed first?

Been using an Edge 830 for about 5 years now and it’s been solid, but I’ve been thinking about upgrading lately. Just noticed the 1050 is going for $599, which seems like a decent drop. Is it actually a noticeable upgrade in real use? Would you say it’s worth it at this price?

Are pearls actually BIFL or are we just telling ourselves that?

Okay so I get why people call pearls "timeless" they're not a trend cycle thing, I'll give them that.

But here's what I'm trying to figure out: is that actually true for durability and daily wear? Or is it mostly marketing + emotional attachment + the fact that they just look nice?

Because pearls are soft right? Like you can't just throw them in a drawer with your keys and call it a day. They need restringing eventually. They hate perfume and hairspray. That doesn't exactly scream "buy it for life" to me unless you're babying them.

I've been looking at a few brands while overthinking this. Pure pearls kept popping up in my searches and I'm honestly trying to separate real long-term value from just… liking how they look and wanting that to be enough.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're a scam or anything. More just are we buying pearls because they'll actually last decades of real life, or because we want them to? Would love to hear from someone who's worn the same pearl studs daily for like ten years. Does that actually work or are you on your third pair?

Couldn’t decide between Bedrocks or Birks

Been wearing both around the house for a couple of days and with different outfits etc. I genuinely hope both options will serve me well. Has anyone experience with both? I got the tokios for the blackstrap instead of the bostons. The Bedrock mountain clogs seem cool, too.

36yo Panasonic microwave

It's finally time to replace this old soldier, a 36yo Panasonic microwave! My dad bought it second-hand from a shop in Germany back in 2004.

It's been used by three generations and is still working perfectly so it'll be sent to a vacation home.

Reccomendations for a twin/full sized comforter or duvet cover that is *cotton* and a darker color?

I'm struggling to find this, especially since I don't shop for bedding often (my comforter lasted me 14 years before finally falling apart) and google searches are so clogged with ads that aren't actually what I'm looking for.

I sleep on a twin sized bed and I'm looking for a new comforter or duvet cover that is a darker color like green or blue (or hey, even both at the same time) that is *also* cotton and not microfiber or similar. I'd even be happy with a polyester cotton blend. But so far everything I can find is either a twin size but microfiber or cotton but doesn't come in twin and/or is like white or light colored.

Maybe I'm just asking for the impossible? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Best Mens T-shirts: Asket vs Lady White Co. vs Whitesville vs House of Blanks

Hi all. I am trying to upgrade my wardrobe. I’m starting my first job (usual attire in tech is t-shirt + jeans). I’ve looked through many reddit posts and these 4 brands seem to be the most frequently mentioned. Here are my criteria:

  • < $100 per shirt
  • I’m tall with a lean build (6’1” / 185 cm and about 160 lb / 73 kg)
  • Look good (with jeans or khakis/sneakers)
  • Feel good
  • Long lasting

I’m open to other brands too. I have 0 frame of reference since I usually just wear under armour shirts.

Bonus questions

If you feel like it, I have a few brand specific questions depending on your rec, but feel free to ignore.

  • If Asket is the rec, is The Lightweight T-Shirt ($95) worth the upgrade from The T-Shirt ($65)?
  • If Lady White Co., which one is best: Our T-shirt, Athens, Municipal, Regby, Dry-lite, or Mesh?
  • If Whitesville, where to buy online?
  • If House of Blanks, should I go midweight or heavyweight or other? Also, do the numbers matter, e.g., 1008 MIDWEIGHT T-SHIRT vs 1009 MIDWEIGHT T-SHIRT

Thanks in advance to everyone taking the time to give advice

Best travel backpack (water resistant preferred) for someone with a bad back (multiple fusions, flat back).

I need something I can walk around the airport and city in comfortably. Not hiking or anything, just long days in the city with it on my back. Does not need to be huge. In fact the lighter the better. But still durable materials. And by weatherproof I just mean my things won’t get wet if I’m caught in the rain and have to run for cover.

I have a north face backpack that is not designed well for travel in my opinion. Things just get lost in the bottom. Also no chest or waist strap. Also not weather proof.

Any travel backpack recommendations good for someone with a bad back? Should I look for something with many adjustable features? Do I need to go into stores and try them on? Thanks in advance.

This one from Patagonia looks nice.

I wanted to ask what underwear you guys are using that lasts more than a year?

The reason I'm asking this is cause the pair i ordered two months ago are starting to fray at the seams with the elastic stretchi out.

I want pairs that are truly durable for daily wear, light workouts, and travel. Price isn’t the main issue if they genuinely last.

I also liked the Micromodal briefs from Freecultr so any brands similar to this that have micromodal briefs or trunks would be much appreciated.

Also wanted to know what’s your longest-lasting underwear and why does it hold up so well? Also, curious about your laundry routine — do you do anything special (specific wash settings, detergents, drying methods) .
