My Rucking Setup (And It's Not A GoRuck)

Before anyone bashes me for not having a GoRuck, I actually bought the Rucker 5.0 and just found it super uncomfortable (and yes, I rucked with it for like 4 miles to try and break it in but I just couldn't do it because the shoulder straps left my shoulders red and sore). But I looked ALL OVER for an alternative, and also wanted more of a budget option. And this is no shade to Goruck, they're an awesome brand, and if I stick with this, I'm sure I'll eventually end up with one again in the future lol.

So after going to my local REI store (camping and outdoor store located in the US) I searched for hiking bags to try and see if something worked. And at REI, they have weighted bags at the backpack try on station, and I loaded it up with 25lbs to test out a few.

I finally ended up with an Osprey Talon 22. It cost $175 (but was able to use a $20 off coupon from REI) I'll attach some pics to maybe help someone out there, because damn, I wish I had someone help me to save a month of looking lol.

I went with the Talon 22 because it has :

- Great back ventilation

- Comfy shoulder straps

- Decent chest straps

- Comfy hip belt (with small storage)

- Load lifters on shoulder straps (to bring the bag closer to your back)

So.....what I did was pack 2 bigger towels on the bottom of the bag...that's it.

And then I went to Home Depot and bought a bag of play sand (less than $10 for a 40lb bag)

And then I found an old drawstring backpack

I then cut open the bag of sand and took out the amount I needed to end up with the correct amount I wanted to carry (40lb bag - 20lbs taken out = 20lb bag to ruck. I'm a newbie so I'm starting with 20lbs for now)

And then zip-tied the remaining 20lb bag of sand at the top so that it didn't spill all over the drawstring bag

I placed the 20lb bag of sand in the drawstring backpack (which makes is easy to also pull in and out of the osprey by just grabbing the drawstring bag in and out)

Hopefully this helps and inspires someone out there to use either a hiking backpack that you already own, or try out this Talon. I know it's not like....budget budget, but it's cheaper that many of the rucking bags out there.

*** I'm a newbie with rucking, so that's why I'm going light right now at 20lbs. And I also understand that I'm sure the max the Osprey Talon 22 holds is MAYBE 30-35lbs, but I thought this was a really good intro setup for someone out there that needs an idea.

You all have been awesome in this community, so much love!

I tried adding more than 1 pic and apparently I can't. But there's the bag lol

Best Clippers/Shaver?

I've tried the Philips One Blade and the pitbull skull shaver, but I'm not a fan of the skull shaver and it leaves my head irritated. The one blade is ok, but I want something that's more of a clipper style. And the one blade takes a few passes to get everything and sometimes pulls. So, looking for cordless clippers. Also, budget friendly lol.

Thank you for the recs!

Frustration With Packing A Ruck bag

I bought a Goruck Rucker 5.0 and it was way too stiff and uncomfortable (I know you have to break it in) but I walked about 3 miles with it and just could ther used to it. I sold that.

So now I'm trying to find a good backpack to use, and I've been trying to practice with the osprey nebula I have and also the Gregory Miko 20 and I even tried a 5.11 rush 12, and I just can't get it right to build the bag up to have the weight be high near the shoulders.

I tossed in towels at the bottom, a big winter jacket, I even tried yoga blocks. I'm just wondering what you all use to hold things high and tight? (I have a free weight, 1-10lb weight, and 2-5lb weights, and I even made 4-5lb sand bag pills to create the 20lbs I want).

Any advice for a newbie would be welcome! Thank you all.

Newbie Bag Question : Goruck Rucker 5.0 or 5.11 Rush 12?

I bought both bags and I'm going to return one. I have the 20 liter version of the rucker 5.0.

I'm just wondering what the long-term reviews are with both (I know the rucker 5.0 is newer, but even a previous Rucker model is fine to answer for). I think both are pretty close in comfort, but I found the 5.11 sits almost at my mid back, and the rucker is just a little higher on me. And on the Rucker, the lumbar pad sits almost mode back for me....is it too short for me? I'm 5'11".

I'm also curious about adding 25+ lbs of weight in the 5.11 over a long term use, and if it's just worth it to go straight to the rucker and just keep that. The 5.11 is also $100 cheaper.

This community has been great and I appreciate you helping me start this journey!

Osprey 26+6 As An EDC Bag?

Just wondering if anyone has used it as an every day backpack here. I see the Daylite version is on sale and I've tried it in stores and love it and think I wanna buy it. But the transporter version also looks amazing!

Why aren't we talking about Morgan's guitarist's faces? Lol.

I went to the Denver show a few weeks back, and forgot to post about it....but when performing Whiskey Glasses, I was dying watching Tyler and his faces on the screen! (Sorry if this is a possible spoiler for those that haven't attended yet)

Newbie here wondering if a regular backpack would work

So I just did a deep dive into rucking a few days ago and actually ordered a plate on Amazon. Instead of spending hundreds on a Goruck backpack, would a regular backpack work? I kind of played around with weight distribution and know that it's probably best to put the weight in the laptop section of a backpack right? I'm only starting with like 15-20lbs.

I do have a North Face Recon and was planning on using that. Thanks!

SMP Vs Hair Unit

Has anyone here ever done SMP, and then tried a hair unit? Or vice versa? I'm tore between them both and just wanted to see if someone has tried both.

Or....I'm open to pros and cons on both too. Thanks!

This feels like such a nerdy question, but does anyone have any recommendations on books that talk about backpacks? Lol.

I know we all have a fun addiction to bags here in many baggers, but like, are books on this even a thing?
