If you're looking for something to do Wednesday evening...

The Food Bank's Burger Showdown is this Wednesday, August 19 at Feed the Camel!

If you've never been, here's how it works: try some burger-inspired dishes and vote for your favorite... That's pretty much it 😄 ANNND, every one-dollar vote helps provide 3 meals for local families. So it's a fun night out and also does some good!

We'll be there from 5-8:30 PM at McKinley Arts & Culture Center (925 Riverside Dr) if anyone wants to pop by.

School supplies, health screenings, food assistance, and more at the Family Health Festival

It's almost that magical time of year when notebooks cost $47, SOOO... we're excited to partner, yet again, with local organizations for the next Family Health Festival on Saturday, August 1, from 9 AM–12 PM at Hug High School (3530 Sullivan Lane, Sparks)!

Family Health Festivals are designed to bring helpful resources together in one place so families can connect with the services they need. Every Festival is a little different depending on which community partners are participating, but you can typically find resources like:

  • Free school supplies
  • Free clothing items
  • Free children's books
  • Back-to-school vaccines for ages 4–18
  • Dental screenings
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Food Bank Mobile Harvest
  • SNAP and Medicaid application assistance
  • Mental health resources

If you know a friend, neighbor, coworker, or family member who could benefit from these resources, let them know! >>> https://www.fbnn.org/gethelp/fhf/

Kids can help fight hunger this summer with a lemonade stand (and maybe win Wild Island passes)

Hello! 🌞 Food Banker here:

We're launching a brand-new summer fundraiser called Squeeze Out Hunger, and we'd LOVE to see our local families get involved! Basically, kids host a lemonade stand and raise money to help provide meals for local families facing hunger.

Squeeze Out Hunger runs July 7 through August 2, and every registered participant gets their own fundraising page, plus a toolkit with printable signs, posters, social media templates, some basic hunger talking points and..... even a lemonade recipe.

This was actually inspired by a Food Bank staff members' kid who hosted a lemonade stand in 2017 that ended up helping provide more than a thousand meals. It was a great example of how kids can make a real impact that we decided to build an entire campaign around it (yearssss later).

As an extra incentive, every registered stand that receives at least one donation will be entered into a drawing to win four all-access passes to Coconut Bowl at Wild Island!

Whether your kid raises $2 or $20, every dollar helps! Every dollar raised provides 3 meals for local families :)

If you'd like to learn more, register a stand, or get all the templates, here's the full event page: https://www.fbnn.org/event/squeeze-out-hunger/

Happy to answer any questions!

Free meals for kids!

Hey everyone! We’re the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and we run the Kids Cafe Summer Meals program. We wanted to share this in case it helps a family in your area.

Kids Cafe Summer Meals are happening now, offering free meals for kids ages 2 to 18 across communities in northern Nevada while school’s out. The way the program works depends on the location, but the goal is simple, making sure kids have reliable access to food all summer long.

In Reno and Sparks, meals are served on-site during the week, so kids can stop by and eat at a consistent location. In rural northern Nevada communities, families can pick up a weekly grab-and-go meal box for each child, which includes 7 breakfasts and 7 lunches.

For those weekly pickup sites, a parent or guardian must pick up meals, and a child needs to be present, or you can bring documentation like a birth certificate or school ID.

Each site has its own schedule, so it’s worth checking ahead to find what works best for your area: https://www.fbnn.org/GetHelp/KidsCafe/

Summer meals for kids are starting soon

Hey everyone! I wanted to share this because it could really help some families this summer.

Kids Cafe Summer Meals program offers free meals for kids ages 2 to 18 starting in June, and sites will be opening up at different times across our region. Around the Reno/Sparks area, there are 23 locations where kids can stop by and eat on-site, which is awesome for keeping things consistent all summer.

If you’re in a rural community, there’s also a weekly pickup option with 7 breakfasts and 7 lunches per child. That includes places like Silver Knolls, Winnemucca, Wadsworth, Minden, Gardnerville, Lovelock, West Wendover, Wells, and Elko. For the rural sites, please keep in mind that kids need to be there at pickup, or a parent or guardian can bring documentation like a birth certificate or school ID.

Schedules vary depending on the site, so please check before heading out. Here’s the full list: FBNN.org/GetHelp/KidsCafe

Free food, health resources, and more this Wednesday in Reno (3 to 6 PM)

Hi :) Since I've had luck in this sub before, thought I'd pop by again to share something helpful happening this week 💙

The Food Bank and a bunch of local partners are hosting a Family Health Festival this Wednesday, May 20 from 3 to 6 PM at the Neil Road Recreation Center (3925 Neil Rd).

It’s basically a one stop spot for free community resources. Depending on the event, that can include:

  • Food distribution
  • Help applying for SNAP or other benefits
  • Health screenings and vaccines
  • Kids and family services
  • Hygiene items and other basics

Not every service is guaranteed, but there’s usually a good mix and it’s all free! If you want more details or to check out the other festivals happening this year, here’s the link:
https://www.fbnn.org/gethelp/fhf/

If you or someone you know could use a little extra support right now, it’s definitely worth stopping by!

Hi :) 💌

Quick reminder that one of the easiest ways to help your neighbors is happening this Saturday, May 9. It’s the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, and participation really is low‑effort.

Grab a bag, toss in some non‑perishable food, and leave it by your mailbox. Your letter carrier picks it up while delivering mail. No sign‑ups, no driving around... We really can't express how easy it is.

Food collected in Reno and Sparks goes straight to the Food Bank, and in many rural communities it stays local with partner pantries.

What to donate if you’re checking the pantry:

  • Non‑perishable items
  • Unopened and not expired
  • No glass or homemade items

If you’ve got food and a mailbox, you’re already most of the way there! 💙

Build Day for CANstruction is starting tomorrow morning at Meadowood Mall. Teams will be jumping in early and turning thousands of cans into large‑scale structures throughout the day. It usually starts off looking a bit chaotic, but by the end, everything comes together in a pretty impressive way!

If you’re around, you can stop by and watch the builds take shape in person. If not, photos will be added online throughout the day so people can follow along and see how everything turns out. People’s Choice voting opens as soon as Build Day begins, so the community gets a say in which structure takes the top spot while also supporting local hunger relief.

A few quick details:

  • $1 equals 1 vote and helps provide 3 meals
  • Structures can be seen at Meadowood Mall or online
  • Voting opens Wednesday, April 29 at 8 AM and closes Monday, May 4 at 6 PM

All the info, photos, and voting details are here: https://www.fbnn.org/canstruction2026/
