Interruptive / Disruptive Map view (Map popping up on strava app on apple watch when biking)

When we're biking with an apple watch (w/ strava app), it randomly switches from stats to "beacon/map" view.

This is new, and very disruptive behavior, and I can't seem to turn it off.

I'm trying to pace myself on long rides, and the whole reason I'm using the watch is to get quick stats (without stopping).

The map view on the watch removes the stats.

The real annoyance: It takes 2 hands to dismiss the map and get back to stats.

That means, stopping a ride, which could be mid-downhill, or trying to ride with no hands, just to get back to the stats.

And, in the age of Strava going all in on AI, can't their AI tell that I don't need a map? Most of us, when biking, are spending 80%+ time on paths we've done dozens of times already. We are NOT lost. We don't need a map.

And, can't their AI tell that every time the map comes up, the only action the user took is to DISMISS it? Doesn't that tell the app that the user doesn't want that new disruptive feature?

And, I can't seem to get the image out of my head: A team at Strava that's meeting several times over months, with a Product Manager coming up with this bad idea, lots of discussion with engineers to build it, QA to test it, and nobody actually uses it to bike? Nobody has the courage to tell the PM that this is a bad idea?

For new features like this, they really need to AT LEAST give us a setting to turn off these things. They can use the data on % who turned it off to steer their product evolution.

It's very troubling to see the fact that they aren't listening to even paying customers on support channels, and not looking at data on users dismissing features.

My favorite bay loop (~100 miles)

Going CCW so that the dominant afternoon NNW winds give me a strong tailwind to blow me home (to the South Bay).

The Bay Trails are great on the Peninsula, but lacking on the East Bay side. (Yeah, I know the Hayward & San Leandro bay trails are awesome, but they are too bumpy if you need to go all day.). Mission Blvd is a great safe straight shot in the East Bay.

The ~$5 Ferry ride from Jack London Square to SF is just fantastic. A good 25 minute break midway.

Edit/Update: Thank you u/go_west_til_you_cant for making the route with ridewithgps:

This is indeed the same safe, mostly flat route with tons of variety, but a ferry ride needed to cross the bay!

Happy Fathers Day

Many teachers are also fathers.

And, are father figures (whether they are aware or not) to many students.

There have been some surprises when a student that I didn’t think I had much chemistry with, would send me a message about how much I helped them, and found out through the grapevine that they didn’t have a father in their life.

Keep shaping kids positively with love and consequences.

Love those mom teachers too. It’s just not their day today.
