What’s the lifecycle of a rule set?

Another post on falling in love with dead rule sets had me wondering about what’s the usual life cycle is a ruleset and what causes them to either die or keep going?

I tend to think it’s party what scale is popular at the time, plus publisher’s need to make money that has some effect. Then there are games that won’t die. X-Wing for instance, suffered near death from an edition change and then is still going after the publisher dropped it. Historical rules come and go for each era, scale and mass/skirmish size.

Is there a general arc? Are there clear exceptions?

Shirt Tails gang member mini

Gangs of New York mini from the Shirt Tail gang. It was primed black, zenithal with a makeup sponge, blocking base colors, wash, mids and highlight, shading under the shirt. The cobbles are Milliput and sculpted.

After a set of police this is my first not from that set.

Going for table ready.

Historical Wargame Cons

What are some upcoming historical wargame cons (board games or minis), as in you will be able to get hotel, badges, and into games that are worth attending even if needing to travel (air, train—more than a 3 hour drive) in the US?
